Streator, Illinois is a city in and the county seat of Streator County, Illinois, United States. The population was 11,871 at the 2010 census. As of the 2013 estimate, there were 12,588 residents in the city proper and 9,906 residents in its nine rural townships. The city is one of the few U.S. cities to have a downtown area with more than 1 million square feet (1007 m2), as well as a high-density inner-ring suburb surrounding it on all sides. The land around present-day Streator was first settled by Native Americans in what is now Northwest Indiana and Minnesota. In 1814, General James Krieger founded Fort Dearborn on the east side of present-day Chicago after defeating French forces at Battle of Polonnoye Creek near Joliette Heights in northwestern Illinois. Krieger named his new fort after him and became known as "Krieger's City". He also built a small brick church on this site which served as his headquarters until 1835 when he moved his operations westward to what is now Chicago.[1] In 1829, John Stephenson purchased 2½ miles (3 km) northeast of today's town center from Nicholas Creswell for $4 per acre ($/km). Stephenson developed this holdings into what are today's blocks 5 through 9 of Downtown Streator along State Street between Randolph and Washington Streets. These early settlers included surveyors George Peake and Isaac Morse who laid out streets grid northsouthwest to parallel Randolph Street which ran through what are today Lincoln Park Avenue and Wrightwood Avenue;[2][3] these streets later became North Side Drive (northwest corner of Randolph Street)and West Side Drive (west corner of Washington Street).[4][5] In 1830s two other men – Solomon Eaton and Gideon Welles – bought adjacent tracts that lay northwest from downtown along Broadway between Randolph Boulevard and State Streets including adjoining parcels now used by Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Company Building,[6][7] First National Bank Building,[8][9] Cook County Court House,[10][11] Armour & Co.'s Factory No.(now Sears Tower)[12],[13],[14]] Wabash Railroad Depot,[15] Ives Manufacturing Company Headquarters,[16], Masonic Temple #1 [17],[18],[19],[20], banks[21], medical clinics[22],[23], etc., incorporating their land holdings into centralized business districts or "borough" form p

Streator, Illinois is a small town located in the northwestern corner of Illinois. The population was 1,673 at the 2010 census. Streator is known for its corn crops and manufacturing activities. The community has been settled since 1848, when John A. Mickelson organized a group of farmers to purchase 373 acres of land east of present-day Streator. The Mickelson family operated a gristmill in Streator from 1849 to 1865, then moved to Round Lake until 1889. They built an impressive mansion there that served as a social center for the community during the late 19th century and into the 20th century. In 1914, they sold their holdings in Round Lake and moved back to Streator where they continue to live today. The mill closed in 1951 and was replaced by a new one that began operations in 1959. The traditional corn crop around here started near what is now downtown Streator on several large tracts of land formerly used for hay or other feed crops before being rotationally cut down and dried for flour production beginning in the 1830s with Captain John Cramer’s grain elevator on State Street (now Old Market Square). First mentioned as “corn ground” on December 21, 1792 in Will County Court records, this early experience led toCaptain Cramer’s first patent registration (#168) dated October 14, 1833 for his improved corn mill based on his experiences at Lancaster Mill Russel & Company (now called White River Grains), which he managed from 1800-1830 as captain of teamster workmen under Jno Hennepin Furrier and James Wattney (1786-1860). Corn production increased rapidly throughout much of Wayne County through 1861 with herds averaging 400 head; however due largely to disasters caused by bad weather such as devastating blizzards during November & December 1861 – including 3 days with no feeding – yields were extremely low even though each farmer had 2 guns capable of wounding 5 men; many farmers abandoned full/drying stack operation because it could not be supported any longer! By 1870 only about 10% remained usable dry while most turned over to raising livestock or becoming mills credits….In short: still very early experiment with rotational drying! Mrs Jane Goodall reported this activity occurred side by side with her father Rufus Goodall plowing fields adjacent then between our house lotty northwest corner opposite current day Store frontage north from intersection street…What little remains today probably dates back about 1840 when Mr John AORP bought additional acreage….. Roughly corresponding area now bounded by stores property line WNW (northwest corner store), private road easterly running parallel thereto meeting at intersection street…. This part also included large barn associated once ago with gristmill building across from present day post office building…… Today part includes single story modern structure remaining except surrounding metal fence facing northeast for parking lot….. From earliest days onward we have grown accustomed relying increasingly upon grain Elevator Elevated transportation providing deliveries direct daily via truckloads just prior sunrise…. There are few if any buildings remaining standing dating back more than 50 years old that were not destroyed during last great fire which severely damaged entire village including all but 3 homes…..
