Taylorville is a city in Putnam County, Illinois, United States. The population was 10,716 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Putnam County. The community was founded in 1871 by John Tilton and his family as a small farming community on the edge of what is now known as Collinsville. In 1878, Tilton and his wife Esther moved to Taylorville from Whitesburg, Kentucky, where they had been living since 1850. The town's early growth was based on its location near two railroads: the Chicago and Great Western Railway (C&GW) line ran through it from north to south and the Illinois Central Railroad (ICR) line ran east-west through it. The arrival of these two railways allowed for easy access to markets and transportation links throughout central Illinois. By 1900, Taylorville had become one of the most important agricultural communities in southern Illinois due to its location along those lines and its successful production of wheat, corn, potatoes, tomatoes and other vegetables. In 1916–1917, during World War I, Taylorville became an important strategic center for munitions production because it possessed several large factories that capability produced battlefield supplies such as artillery rounds, aircraft parts and other munitions essential to Allied victory. In 1948–1949 Representative George Symington (D-Ill.) visited Taylorville while traveling through Southern Illinois on his first national campaign tour after winning election as United States Senator from Illinois in 1946 following a close race against Adlai Stevenson (D-Ill.). After meeting with Mayor Wanda Laughlin and others in town he announced that he would be running for office again in 1948 but this time nationally rather than state level; he would not serve out his full term however because he decided instead to run for president in 1952 instead He died before completing his second term as U S Senator which made him ineligible for reelection That year Republican Dwight D Eisenhower won re-election handily over Democrat Nixon

Taylorville was founded in 1831 by John Taylor, a landowner and politician. The town grew rapidly during the 1830s and 1840s, thanks to its location at the head of navigation on the Illinois River. By 1849, Taylorville had a population of 2,500 people and was one of the fastest-growing towns in Illinois. During the 1850s, Taylorville became known for its manufactures: cotton mills, looms, and printing presses. In 1860, following the American Civil War, Taylorville experienced a boom period as trade increased with the Union army. In 1865, however, due to advances in transportation and communication technology, Taylorville's growth slowed down significantly. In 1971, after more than two centuries of continuous growth and progress within the community of Taylorville – both economic and social – the town officially ceased to exist as an incorporated entity when it merged with neighboring Carbondale into Carbondale-Taylorville Township. Today visitors can explore many remains from this time including Pioneer Cemetery (opened in 1865), John Sibley Park (named for local pioneer John Sibley), Cherry Street Baptist Church Historic Site (built in 1892),and numerous other historical landmarks that helped make up what is now Carbondale-Taylorville Township.
The town of Taylorville was founded in 1833 by George Washington and his family. At that time, the area around present day Taylorville was a part of the Kankakee County. The township was organized on November 15, 1835, and named for General James H.Taylor, who served as a brigadier general in the War of 1812. The first post office in the township was established on December 3, 1836. The following year, Mr. John Hickey built a sawmill in what is now the town center. This mill continued to produce logs until it burned down in 1888.
