Tinley Park is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 31,531 at the 2010 census. Tinley Park is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The name Tinley Park comes from two villages in Hungary: Tincs and Temesvár. These villages were adjacent to each other on the border of present-day Hungary and Transylvania ( Romania ), which made it difficult for them to share one name. So, Hungarians began calling their village Temesvár because it sounded like "tin" and "viar". Eventually, this became Tinley Park after an early settler named John Tinney moved there in 1837. Tinney had been a surveyor for the Indiana Land Company and had come to IL via Detroit in 1835 as its agent. He bought 7 acres of land east of what is now Northwestern Avenue in what is now Elmhurst Township, Cook County. The first house he built there was called "The House on the Burnt Pines", which still stands today at 242nd Street and Western Avenue in Tinley Park.(1) A second house – also known as "The House on the Burnt Pines" – was built about 1840 by Samuel Gregg.(2) It still stands today at 215th Street and Western Avenue in Tinley Park.(3) From his home near modern day Elmhurst Road/Western Ave., John tinney watched over his new community while others worked to settle it."John tinney founded Tinley park when he saw a need for more affordable housing."(4)"He started building homes with his own money""and helped many people find their place here.""Tinney Parks played an important role not only during its early years but into the 20th century″(5)"He donated land to support schools.""In 1905 he donated land that would become Roosevelt High School.""He also funded art exhibits throughout southern Illinois"" ultimately helping make Tinley park one of America's most beautiful towns."(6)"John tinney has left a lasting legacy on this community″

Tinley Park was founded in 1847 by Amos Tinley and his family. The community is named after the Tinley tree, which was first planted in the town. The tin metal mines that operated in the town closed down in the early 1900s, buttinies continue to live there today.
