Washington is a small city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. It was named after George Washington, the first president of the United States. The population was 5,854 at the 2010 census. Washington is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The town began as a Presbyterian settlement in 1837 on land donated by Reverend John Armstrong. The community grew rapidly and by 1860 had 454 residents. In 1871 it became an independent municipality with its own government under a mayor and five council members. In 1903 it amalgamated with neighboring Addison to form Washington-Addison Township (now Addison Township). All this growth came about because of what were then very limited resources: only 3½ acres (1 km²) of land lay within present-day Washington limits when the township was established; but since timber and other natural resources were abundant close at hand, development proceeded apace despite some initial setbacks due to lack of transportation and good roads access. In 1916, when Cook county was created from part of Chicago, Washington became one of its six townships within that new county. By 1930 it had become one of Cook's most populous communities with over 100,000 residents--a figure that has only grown since then! Over time there have been various name changes for various reasons--most notably in 1957 when trustees voted to change the name to "Washtenaw Heights" after Washtenaw County in Michigan which they said appeared more appropriate than "Washington." But no matter how many times someone tries to change their name or move away from their original place of residence because they've outgrown their town or haven't seen fit to keep up with changing trends elsewhere in Cook County...the name just won't go away!
