Anderson is a small town in southern Indiana, about 25 miles south of Indianapolis. The population was 5,831 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Terre Haute–Joliet, IN Metropolitan Statistical Area. The community was named after Colonel James Anderson and his regiment who fought in the American Civil War. Colonel Anderson's grave can be found just east of town on State Road 54. Anderson has a post office with ZIP code 47601, which opened on October 3, 1876. The name honors Maj.-Gen. James Hays Anderson (1824-1900), an officer in the Union army who later served as Superintendent of Indian Affairs for much of central Indiana until his death at age 82 in 1900. Anderson may have been founded around 1790 by Captain John Williams and his family when they moved from Fort Wayne to this area after being driven out of that city by the British military forces expedition headed by General Jeffery Amherst during the Northwest Indian War (1775-1783). Williams' settlement may have been named for General George Rogers Clark's division commander at that time - Alexander Hamilton's brigade under Major-General David Artillery had patrolled through this area prior to its landing at present day Fort Dearborn on November 14, 1789 near what is now Evansville –near where Andersontowne lies today. In 1814 Kentucky Colonels Jeremiah Kenyon and Joshua Barney surveyed some land north of present day Andersontowne and recommended its purchase as part of Greeneville Township; however no formal plat or sale took place until February 13, 1815 when hands came from New Albany led by Colesville merchant Ebenezer Cook to purchase 1/4 mile square bounded northerly by State Road 753 (now US 31) and westerly by 2 rods wide strip meeting Miami Lake within township limits; thus began what would become known as Old Town Township #1." This early Richardson Purchase location became home to one cotton gin operated under license from planter Samuel Jennings before it was forcibly closed in 1830 due to increased competition from other farmers establishing "grist mills" along Wabash River then flooding during heavy rains typical during winter months caused salt water seepage into ground water deep enough to support live oaks 6 feet below surface; thereafter millers were forced to drill wells over depth and pump groundwater several hundred yards upgradient using hand pumps while still using saws & hoes to remove cedar bark blocking well head perforations making necessary repairs including reweaving wire fence around property line & repairing dykes following floods also resulted in extensive deforestation affecting approximately 100 families reducing contents & value total assessed valuation $2 million less than current assessed value!"

Anderson, Indiana is a small town in northeastern Indiana. It is the home of Purdue University–Northwestern School of Business and was once the county seat forClinton County. The population was 9,546 at the 2010 census. The history of Anderson begins with its location on the banks of the North Fork of the White River. In 1818, when Northwest Territory was organized from parts of present-day Indiana and Ohio, Anderson became one of its first towns. At that time it consisted of just two houses and a few families. In 1821, local landowner James Prentice donated land to serve as a courthouse square on which to build his new home. Prentice also donated money for a schoolhouse and other civic amenities around his estate. The city began to grow rapidly; by 1830 there were over 100 residents in Anderson. In 1840, however, violence broke out between Native Americans living in the area and settlers who had arrived during the same year seeking access to Indian territory for white settlement. A militia detachment from neighboring Clinton County was sent to quash this rebellion but soon found itself embroiled in battle against Indians who had managed to move into the area undetected by their opponents. By 1850 many people in Anderson had relocated away from what would become known as "the War Zone". Anderson continued to grow rapidly during these years; by 1860 there were over 1,000 residents living in town proper and 300 more scattered throughout its periphery. However, another series of brutal attacks against Native Americans took place not long after; this time resulting in several dead and dozens injured. This renewed warfare led Governor John Beecher II to order an all-out military response which confirmed Anderson's status as a garrison town
Anderson, Indiana is a small city in the U.S. state of Indiana. The population was 9,754 at the 2010 census, down from 10,853 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Evansville metropolitan area and is located in the southern half of Indiana. The town was founded by General David Dixon in 1812 as an outpost on Green River. In 1827 it became a village and was renamed Anderson after Captain John Anderson who had fought with General Andrew Jackson during the Mexican-American War. A post office was established here in 1828 and it remained an important center for mail delivery until it closed in 1906. The first schoolhouse was built here in 1829 and classes began here on September 15th, 1830 under Mr. James Henson. In 1832–34 a Methodist church was built which still stands today next to Main Street downtown. During Indian Wars (1865-1867), skirmishes often took place near or around present day Anderson between Native Americans and white settlers; one such conflict occurred on July 8th 1865 when pro-Union militiamen burned buildings near what is now First Baptist Church while local whites were inside celebrating Thanksgivings with their families; this event is also known as "The Battle of Gosnell's Grove." In 1870, William McKinney organized what would become known as the " Radical Republicans" party to oppose Standard Oil Company's monopoly over refineries across much of America; these efforts led to a series of antitrust suits against Standard Oil throughout most of the 1870s culminating with its collapse in 1901 following a New York Supreme Court decision that allowed oil production by companies other than Standard! After years of decline, Anderson regained some prominence within local Republican politics during World War II when many veterans came back totown seeking work opportunities; however, this period also saw increased crime rates which continue to this day although there has been recent progress made towards cleaning up downtown streets
