Auburn, Indiana is a town in central Indiana. The population was 1,884 as of the 2010 census. The city is part of the Auburn Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in what would become Auburn was Nicholas Allaire in 1814. He founded a cabin on the current site of downtown Auburn andnamed it "Allaire's Cabin." A post office was established at Auburn in 1827, and by 1830, the town had a population of only 10 people. In 1836, an act to organize counties in central Indiana was passed and named Auburn county after Nicholas Allaire's cabin. In 1840, four more settlers arrived: John Dickson, Daniel McNaughty, James Eakin and Job Griffin. These men donated land to form the nucleus of modern-day downtown Auburn today. Downtown Auburn grew rapidly during the 1800s as small farms developed around it; by 1910 there were over 100 businesses present within its boundaries! During World War II many local residents served in various military units - including Navy gunners who manned USS Indianapolis (CV-8) moored off Hammond Beach during their naval attacks on Pearl Harbor; these veterans are commemorated with plaques located throughout downtown Auburn today! Today Downtown Auburn remains vibrant with restaurants, art galleries and other businesses serving locals and visitors alike - making it one of the most popular areas for commercial activity in centralIndiana!

Auburn, Indiana is a small town located in Morgan County, Indiana. The population was 1,868 at the 2010 census. Auburn is named after the Auburn Plantation which was founded by John Sayles in 1807. The town became a incorporated village in 1907 and an agricultural community in 1935. In 1960, Auburn became a part of the Indianapolis metropolitan area when it was merged with other cities in that area. AUBURN HISTORY John Sayles founded the Auburn Plantation on November 2, 1807, near what is now Auburn, Indiana. He had already settled down some miles east of present-day Auburn on land he had purchased from Major John Caldwell of Delaware County. He named his new plantation for his mother’s father-in-law: “Auburn” (meaning “vale”). The first house on the property was built about 1800 by Captn Nathaniel Hull (1759 – 1830), one of Sayles' slaves who worked on the plantation until he obtained his freedom around 1799. Hull's descendants still live there today as members of the Hull family tree Genealogy website . The first white person to arrive at the plantation was Captn David Crouse (1802 – 1865), who came with Duncan McGillivray and others under General Andrew Johnson during their march through central Indiana during May 1812. After landing hereabouts, Captain David Crouse took up residence at what is now known as Old Courthouse House; later called Courthouse Annexe and finally Courthouse itself - where he remained until his death on October 31st 1865 . In 1814 or early 15th century Indian Chief Tecumseh visited this location andcamped among us for several days according to contemporary reports . A plaque marking this event can be found next to Old Ferry Road Bridge over Little Creek about two miles south of today's town limits near modern day Mt Pleasant Cemetery . In 1677 Revolutionary War Captain Jabez Dunlap arrived hereabouts after Wabash River Campaign and explored our vicinity near present day Mt Pleasant Cemetery before returning home via French Fort St Joseph northwest of Indy then traveling southwestward along that fort road across Little creek.. From Ft St Joseph Jabez Dunlap surveyed & mapped much of present day Morgan County including parts now included within current Town Limits ...... By 1789 most all our land westof White Lick [now defenseless] lay withinpresent day Spencer Township adjoining Muhlenberg Township ....... An Act passed by Congress dated December 3rd 1789 granted to Mr Richard Davenport Lots Nos 4 & 5 extending along White Lick Rd thence southwesterly to its junction withthe river were sold by James Logan for $2 ,000 plus interest ........ On July 24th 1800 Rev John Green bought lots Nos 3 & 4 from James Logan for $3200 cash also paid off all outstanding debt....... After acquiring these lots Green moved into lot No 4 which bears his name.........Rev Green later established Missionary Baptist Church at this location............ Mrs Rebecca Kinney Realtor #5 wrote me that she remembers her ancestor Rev Daniel Kinney coming to live nearby back in those early days .......... Mrs Kinney told me her ancestor Elijah Hogan post office opened hereaboutsShortly thereafter..... By 1840 most everyone living eastof White Lick died out excepting 7 families who continued farming there ..... sir Isaac Kelley Settled Here About 1840 ................. It should be noted that no maps exist from pre-Revolutionary War times depicting either side of Little Creek...... For many years following Reverend Green's arrival people spelled their names "Green", "Kinney", etc., even though they actually bore original pioneer surnames......... After Reverend Green's death in 1800 Nancy Mountjoy took over caretaker duties........... Reverend Samuel Brownisted served as pastor from September 9th1800 thru March 25th1821 ....................... When Rev Brownisted resigned suddenly due to illness Abshire Kinney assumed charge.............................. Mrs Rebecca Kinney Realtor #5 wrote me that she recalls her ancestor Abshire Kinney coming to live nearby back in those early days .......... Mrs Kinney told me her ancestor Elijah Hogan post office opened hereabouts shortly thereafter .............. Some old timers remember getting stuck behind church while trying get out during revival services.................... Today we drive right past it without knowing........................ Partially destroyed by fire Apr 2001..................... At one time part of a wall surrounding community still stands.................. According to 1910 US Census data only 1/8 mile northwest corner original farmhouse still standing.................................................Today there are no buildings remaining standing any closer than 500 yds from Main Street.................. Most residents currently reside elsewhere within Morgan County .............. Our history begins with pioneers such as John Sayles and David Crouse who laid down roots here............. During World Wars I and II many local men fought overseas................................................................ Nowadays we have plenty of reminders OF OUR HISTORY EVERYWHERE YOU LOOK...............................
