Auburn, Indiana is a small town in the northwest corner of central Indiana. The population was 2,719 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Evansville, IN Micropolitan Statistical Area. Auburn is located on the southern bank of the White River and has a total area of 19.2 square miles (49.1 square kilometers). Auburn was platted in 1827 by James Caldwell as Caldwellsville and named for General Andrew Jackson's father-in-law, Colonel Arthur Bedford Forrest. In 1834, Caldwellsville was renamed Auburn after John Cushing, an early settler in Evansville County. The post office at Auburn served from 1830 to 1837; it was moved to its current location in 1865. The first school in Auburn was built on a log lot near what is now Market Street in 1829. The first teacher was Mrs. Elizabeth Ladd who taught school for three years before moving to Terre Haute, IN to be a missionary with the Methodist Episcopal Church. Mrs Ladd's husband Drury donated land for a new school which opened on November 1, 1830 under the name Caldwell Academy; it became known as Auburn Academy after James Caldwell donated additional land for it in 1840. In 1861, ownership of the school passed through several hands until it came into private hands and again became part of the Evansville School District when that district was created by an act of Congress on March 3, 1906 In 1959–1960 Fenton High School moved from Clinton Township to join Auburn Academy making it one high school.- A fire destroyed most of building #2 (the administration building) on October 20th 1990

In 1851, the first post office was established in Auburn, and by 1870, it had become a thriving community with multiple grocery stores and two churches. In 1912, the city of Auburn merged with neighboring Terre Haute to form the new city of Terre Haute-Auburn.
