On December 12, 1941, the United States of America was activated into World War II. The navy mobilized quickly and deployed ships and sailors to be part of the war effort. By December 1941, the navy had sent more than 1,000 sailors and Marines to fight in Europe. The Beech Grove Naval Shipyard was one of these shipyards. In early 1942, the navy began construction on a new shipbuilding complex called the USS Indianapolis. This ship would be used as a training vessel for future naval vessels. In early 1942, it was announced that Japan had bombed Pearl Harbor in Hawaii. This attack caused great alarm throughout America because it demonstrated Japan's ability to strike anywhere in the world without warning. As a result of this attack, President Franklin D. Roosevelt ordered all American warships stationed in Europe to return home immediately. This decision meant that many Beech Grove sailors were left behind at sea with no way back home or any way to return home safely. One sailor who experienced this situation is military veteran Arthur Pérez-Reyes*. Pérez-Reyes* served during World War II from 1945 until his death in 2018.* He remembers being homesick and feeling lost after his unit left for war: "I remember feeling very homesick; I wanted my family back." "At first I was devastated," says Pérez-Reyes* about his experience when his unit returned home only to find he could not go ashore because he'd been drafted into the military prior to Pearl Harbor.* "It just broke my heart that I couldn't come back home." Beech Grove is a small town in Taney County, Indiana, United States. The population was 1,846 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Terre Haute, IN Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in Beech Grove was James Hargrave in 1814. The post office was established in 1830 and changed its name to Beech Grove in 1839. In 1861, Daniel Boone bought land near Beech Grove and built a cabin there. He named it "Boone's Knob" after himself and his family. In 1873, John Witherspoon opened a general store on the corner of Main Street and Park Avenue in Beech Grove. By 1886, Witherspoon had two stores and nine employees. By 1915, Witherspoon had four stores and twenty-six employees; all were operated as department stores. In 1922–23, Witherspoon merged with Grosse Pointe Blankett Co., Inc., which controlled more than 100 businesses including several department stores throughout Michigan and Illinois. At this time Beech Grove became part of Grosse Pointe Blankett's Michigan retail empire under the name "Grosse Pointe." In 1965–66 William Sizemore acquired control of Grosse Pointe Blankett from its parent company American Telephone & Telegraph Company (AT&T). Sizemore renamed the company BellSouth Corporation after his purchase of AT&T's North American telephone operations (the Bell System). In 1984–85 Sizemore sold most of BellSouth's assets to US Westinghouse Electric Company (USWEC) for $5 billion; however, some operations such as television networks remained with USWEC until 1998 when they were spun off into their own companies: Comcast Corp.'s NBCUniversal Entertainment Group (NBCU) and Time Warner Cable's Turner Broadcasting System (TWC). Since deregulation of telecommunications by President Ronald Reagan in 1987,[1] many small towns like Beech Grove have experienced rapid growth due to new business opportunities created by online shopping[2][3] as well as advances in technology that allow for faster shipping times for items such as electronics products.[4] These advances have also led to increased competition among retailers,[5][6] causing some local businesses to file for bankruptcy or close their doors permanently due to decreases in sales or no significant increase since 2007 when online retail giant Amazon began operationalizing throughout much rural America at scale[7][8].
