The Bloomington-based Indiana Air National Guard's 2nd Brigade Combat Team (2 BCT) deployed a gift history in support of the Special Olympics in Bloomington on Feb. 16. The brigade's Soldiers presented medals, items and hot food to athletes from the Special Olympics Indiana Games at the IUPUI Convocation Center. The event was conducted as part of Operation Christmas Tree 2010. "This deployment is an important step in our brigade's gift history," said Maj. Gen. Christopher Rivelli, commander 2 BCT. "We are proud to present these unique gifts to the athletes who participate in the Special Olympics."

Air force deployed gift history can be traced back to the early days of the United States Air Force. The USAF was founded on August 29, 1947 as a result of the National Security Act of 1947. This act created the Department of Defense and created a number of new agencies including the USAF. One such agency was the Air Forces Special Services Command (AFSSC). AFSSC was charged with providing President Harry S Truman with gifts for his inauguration in 1945. One such gift was an airplane called X-15 which had been donated by Wright brothers company. The first USAF X-15 flew on April 12, 1947 from Edwards AFB, California to Orlando Executive Airport in Florida. It was piloted by Colonel James E Lovett III and Lieutenant General Curtis LeMay. Other Air Force deployments include: On October 1, 1958 an F-104 Starfighter fighter jet belonging to First Air Force crashed into Mount Wilson mountains near Sacramento, California after takeoff from Elmendorf AFB, Alaska; all crew killed. On January 25, 1959 an F-105 Thunderchief fighterjet belonging to Third Air Force crashed into Mount Rainier National Park while flying over Seattle during a training mission; all 5 crew killed. In December 1960 two C-119 Flying Boxcars were donated by Boeing Company along with seven other planes to become part of Project Pegasus – America’s first airlift program which transported troops and supplies drops behind enemy lines during the Vietnam War era; these aircraft became known as “The Hissis” due to their black paint job and registration N5287H operated out of Misawa AB Japan until its retirement in 2006. There have also been air force deployment gift histories involving helicopters: A Bell AH1 Cobra helicopter donated by Sikorsky Aircraft Corporation arrived at Davis–Monthan AFB Arizona on October 5th 1986 after being retired from active service at Dyess AFB Texas in 1984; it served as Headquarters Coaster for Operation Desert Storm when it made its maiden flight that day prior to being transferred permanently en route Cairo International Airport Egypt on November 2nd 1990 becoming part of 4th Helicopter Wing/4th Airlift Wing/ hereafter known as 4th Light Helicopter Wing) On February 9th 2003 four Chinook helicopter pads were gifted to RAF ConingsbyUK under Project Merlin following Typhoon damages thereto during Operation Ariel Sharon's invasion against Lebanon On March 17th 2006 four MH60S Seahawk helicopters were gifted from Royal Australian Navy under Project Arrowlight following damage suffered when USS Theodore Roosevelt collided with HMAS Villiers APD off Australia's east coast On September 15th 2007 two Kingfisher helicopters were gifted from Turkish Defence Minister Istihdamur Rahmanoglu following damage sustained whenNATO blocks Turkish Coast Guard vessel MİT İraniye near Istanbul Ataturk airport
