The first military air force unit in Bloomington was the 1st Aero Squadron, activated on December 12, 1912. The squadron served as a flying school and outpost until 1914 when it became an operational unit. In 1915 the 1st Aero Squadron was redesignated the 3d Aero Squadron and during World War I served as a fighter squadron. In 1919 the 3d Aero Squadron was redesignated the 4th Aero Squadron and during World War II served as a bomber squadron. On September 9, 1947, the 4th Aero Squadron was disbanded at Fort Wayne and its members were reassigned to other units within the Air Force or assigned to civilian organizations. The original 1st Aerodrome at Bloomington had been closed by 1944 and used for storage until it was demolished in 1961. The current AFSC facility at 6100 E 71st Street is dedicated to History of The Air Force in Bloomington-Bloomington County In 1942 Major General Leslie Groves reorganized United StatesAAF with four wings: Bomber Wing (later Eighth Air Force), Fighter Wing (later Ninth Air Force), Navigator Wing (later Twelfth Air Force), and Support Group (later Fourteenth Air Force). For operations against Japan Major General Groves determined that available combat aircraft should be divided into two groups; one group would fly strategic bombers from Incirlik airfield while another group would fly fighters from Iwakuni airfield northwest of Tokyo. Colonel Harry Truman called this "theGroves Plan." On October 2, 1945 General MacArthur announced that Japan had capitulated which resulted in worldwide celebrations. This event led to many gifts being given such as uniforms, equipment, planes, etc., from all over the world to U.SAAF personnel stationed in Europe and Asia who were still fighting against Japan

In 1945 Congress passed an act giving away 1% of all defence sales in order to finance postwar Reconstruction in Asia Pacific countries. These include Operation Gulf Stream which saw donations flown into Kuwait during Operation Desert Storm in 1991;Operation Noble Eagle which donated missiles used against Iraq during Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2003;Operation Enduring Freedom which contributed Humvees, Apache helicopters and MQ-9 Reaper drones used against militants inside Afghanistan between 2001–2002 ;Operation Neptune’s Spear which flew food parcels into Afghanistan between 2002–2004 It is interesting to note that not every air force gift goes down memory lane forever. Many times items are discarded or forgotten about but over time they can slowly start making their way back up again thanks to people who love aviation!
The Air Force has a long history of giving back to the community. In 1949, the Air Force established the United States Air Forces Academy (USAAF) in Colorado Springs, Colorado to provide education and training for airmen. The Academy continues to serve as a source of technical education and leadership development for USAF officers and enlisted members today. In 1959, the USAF donated land at Lackland AFB in San Antonio, Texas in order to create an air force base that would house two new fighter aircraft squadrons. The wing was later renamed Aerospace Defense Command (ADC) after the command's first commander, General James "Bull" Halsey. ADC later became part of Tactical Air Command (TAC). In 1973, the USAF donated land at Ellington AFB in Houston, Texas in order to create another air forcebase which would house three new fighter aircraft squadrons. TAC was later renamed Aerospace Defense Command-2 (ADC-2) after its first commander General Curtis LeMay. ADC-2 later became part of TacticalAirCommand-3 (TACC-3), which is now Headquarters USAF/Aerospace Forces Europe/Air Forces Africa.
