On January 1, 1902, IU students first took up arms against their own university administration when they rioted along decided streets around campus during finals week following two separate incidents where cars were vandalized with "I cannot speak for everyone here but I generally think it would have been more respectful if people had simply waited until after finals week" according to UI president William Clements minutes before riots erupted; these events are considered to be some form of proto-rioting against educational institutions across America during this time period In 1912–1913 Blanton Ahern served as mayor pro tempore (vice president) under then-Governor James Meehan who left office on February 8th due to term limits set by law He succeeded his predecessor Daniel Jenssen who'd held that position since 1909 . After serving three terms as mayor pro tempore (1912–1918), Ahern ran unsuccessfully for governor in 1924 before winning election as a Democrat later that year As governor he increased funding for state universities without increasing taxes and made major investments in transportation including founding Purdue University's first bus service which allowed students travelling outside of Purdue campuses to attend classes there

Bloomington, Indiana is a city in the U.S. state of Indiana and the county seat of Posey County. The population was 31,531 at the 2010 census. As of 2019, it hadgrown to 45,830 people living in an area of 106 square miles (251 square kilometers). Bloomington has been called "the cultural capital of America" for its various arts and culture destinations including The University of Notre Dame, Pfeiffer Park, Indiana State Fairgrounds and more. The first permanent settlers in what is now Bloomington were three families from Maryland who crossed the river Missouri on July 26, 1814, during the Expedition which discovered that the Northwest Territory included present-day Indiana. They named their new settlement after Mount Vernon Township in Virginia. The first store opened in 1830 on Tenth Street between Jackson and Washington Streets. In 1839, the Potawatomie Indian War resulted in several casualties among the settlers; four men were killed by Indians while plowing their land near today's Capitol Square. In 1840–1841 a group of thirty-six Methodists led by Revd John Sibley founded a mission church at Prospect Heights on High Street northwest of downtown Bloomington with land donated by Nicholas Hahnemanns Sr.. It served as temporary headquarters for Methodist missionaries until they built their own facility on Randolph Road northeast of town in 1845. That same year also saw construction begin on what would become one of downtown Bloomingtons most iconic landmarks: Pfeiffer Park – later renamed Madison Square Garden after James Kappanee Pogue – which offered athletic competitions and concerts throughout its years as a public space for residents and visitors to enjoy. During World War II many local businesses took part in making wartime supplies available to soldiers stationed nearby such as producing munitions under contract from Mayflower Arsenal Company outside Terre Haute (now Indianapolis). A number of those businesses remain extant today such as Girdler's Furniture Store located at Indianapolis' Northwest Side neighborhood since 1880; Metropolitan Cigar Company building located just east off I-465 north side since 1924; First National Bank building across I-465 east side since 1923; United States Rubber Company plant west side off I-465 since 1922 – all now part or central parts of adjacent neighborhoods within walking distance or short drive thereof like Fountain Square Shopping Center & Race Track Mall etcetera The war effort produced large quantities of aluminum products for military use which became popularly known as "Aluminum Bling." Many locally owned businesses benefited significantly from this wartime boom including Brownsville Glass Works at Fourth Street and Old National Road where General Motors began production starting in 1942; United Drugstore produced gasoline for both Allied forces and American civilians during WW2 before moving operations to Fort Wayne when hostilities ended Many small family farms closed during WWII due to lack Of enough support from government programs like crop insurance which made farming difficult without mechanization or other assistance however some managed to keep going such as grain elevator operators like J Cwik who converted his father’s farm into an elevator company that still exists today
