Air Force gift history in Brownsburg, Indiana began with the dedication of a hangar at Municipal Airport on December 14, 1942. The Air Force Base was then established and flew its first aircraft in 1945. Aircraft were also brought down to Municipal by military helicopters which were unveiled at the airport on November 15, 1945. The base's first command Post was established in 1947 and it played an integral role during the Cold War. It is currently home to Fifteenth Air Force Headquarters. The Fifty-Fourth Fighter Wing activated at Municipal Airport on July 1, 1951. The wing served as part of Ninth Air Force during the Cold War and became operational with F-86 Sabre jets on October 4, 1951. On May 6, 1953 the wing took over from Ninth when that airframe was retired from service. As per Major General Hemanus Sonder’s directive No. 3-3/1/2 dated September 2, 1952, all fighter squadrons were redesignated wings except for One (Nighthawks) which continued under Third United States Army control until their conversion to Tactical Fighter Command (TFC) status on October 1st beneath First United States Army control effective September 30th; however operations of “One” continued until disbanded due to lack of resources necessary for such a large organization Inactivated Oct 1959 At Brownsburg AAF Museum
