Carmel, Indiana is a small town in central Indiana. The population was 9,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Carmel-by-the-Rocks micropolitan area. A post office called Carmel was established in 1872, and remained open until it closed in 1958. The town has been home to a number of businesses including Allis Chalmers Manufacturing Company from 1892 until 1984 when it merged with Maytag Corporation; Anheuser Busch Brewery founded in 1889; Wabash Paper Company founded in 1897; and First National Bank & Trust Company from 1907 until 1955 when it merged with Guaranty Trust Bank. In 1908 First National Bank & Trust Company formed a joint venture with Guaranty Trust Bank to build the earthen dam known as Niagara Falls Bridge which became the first concrete bridge across the Ohio River after being completed on October 16th 1912. That same year Elmer Fenton opened his drive-in restaurant located on State Road 12 near downtown Carmel which would become an influential tourist destination throughout much of central Indiana as well as internationally. That same year First National Bank & Trust company merged with Guaranty Trust bank to form Guaranty Financial Corporation which would continue to operate as both banks before finally filing for bankruptcy protection in 2001.

The surrounding area is rich with history; some of it can be seen in the many sites that are open to visitors such as Mount Rushmore National Monument and Ford Plantation Museum.
Carmel was founded in 1881 by the Carmelite Fathers. It became an incorporated municipality in 1923. The population of Carmel rose from 5,500 in 1901 to 14,000 by 1920. The population peaked at 30,000 in 1950 and then declined to 20,000 by 1970.
