Cedar Lake is a small town in Indiana. It was founded in 1872 by John and Elizabeth (Lincoln) Cedar, who named it in honor of their father, Elijah Cedar. The Cedar family operated the store and log-buildings until 1925. In that year, they sold the business to the Hanna Company. For many years, Cedar Lake was a center for logging activity in the area. In 1969, the Hanna Company merged with US Steel Corporation to form United States Steel Corporation. This company closed its mills in 1973 and 1975 and ceased operations in Cedar Lake. After US Steel's closure, much of the forest around Cedar Lake were clear-cut and used for fuel storage or other purposes. Today only a few scattered trees remain from when Cedar Lake was an active milltown. The history of Cedar Lake began with John and Elizabeth’s arrival there in 1872 as settlers looking for a new home after leaving Michigan’s Upper Peninsula under harsh conditions during the winter of 1871-1872. They brought along their children Sarah (1873-1937), George (1875-1964), Fannie (1877-1972), Edwin (1879-1948), Lula (1900-) and Anna (1902-) all of whom lived to adulthood hereabouts including daughter Peg Sutherland Carlson posthumously born on November 15th 1942 at age 89 years 7 months old – one of numerous pioneers who have made this community their homes over time: “We are proud to call our pioneer days here at CedarLake Memories that still endure today - thanks be to God Almighty!”
