Chesterton is a small town in the US state of Indiana. It is located in Clay Township, and has a population of 350. The Chesterton-Muncie School District serves the town. Chesterton is named after George Fenton Chesterton, an English author who lived in India from 1875 to 1901. Chesterton was founded on December 10, 1864 by George Fenton Chesterton and his wife Eliza Wittek. The first post office was opened in 1865. On November 15, 1867, the first school was built in the town. It was called the Central School and served until 1870 when it moved to Parkland Avenue. The first church serving Chesterton were Aon Chapel (1869) and Our Lady of Lourdes (1871). In 1895, Catholics built Christ the Redeemer Parish Church which still stands today on Main Street near High School. In 1907, Presbyterian Reverend John Hynes donated land for a new Methodist Church which served as both parish hall and church until 1916 when it burned down. In 1922, First Baptist Temple replaced that building with its current structure on Eppard Road which still stands today. On July 1st 1915 local children organized a caravanserai known as "The Enchanted Forest" for fun and souvenirs during their summer vacation at nearby Centerville while their parents were out of town at work or attending religious services; this event would later become known as chestertone fairs (). In 1925 there was also an annual chestertone pageant staged by students from Clinton High School in memory of their late teacher Mr.. Ritchie who had passed away two years earlier while they were still sophomores at Cheyney University where he had been previously teaching high school mathematics class but prior to that he had taught at Stroudsburg College () before coming to Indiana State Normal University ())

The Marine Gift History Museum was founded by retired Rear Admiral John A. Rankin who was curator at the United States Naval Academy’s library from 1973-1976. From 1976-1984, Rankin served as curator for the Navy’s Fleet Gallery at Annapolis where he collected marine gifts from coast guard stations along the Delaware River and Chesapeake Bay. He also founded and directed the Maritime Museum of Rhode Island which closed in 2000 after 32 years of operation. rankin continued his donations of maritime gifts until his death in 2006.
