The sunglasses were issued to officers as part of an special campaign which honored veterans who had served in World War I and II. In 1951, Officer Harry Ahernreceived a whistle from Lieutenant Colonel Elmer Sperry Jr.. The whistle was donated during Operation Snowstorm which took place in December 1950 in order to help clear snow off highways in central Indiana . The whistle has been used by Chesterton Police Department ever since and has become one of the department's trademarks

Chesterton is a town in Morgan County, Indiana, United States. The population was 2,895 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Indianapolis metropolitan area. In 1857, John Chesterton emigrated to this area from Ireland and purchased 640 acres of land just south ofpresent-day Chesterton on the banks of the White River. He named his ranch "Chesterton" after himself and founded a small town around it called Oak Hill on April 15, 1858. It was first started as a Methodist church with about 30 people. The first post office was established in Chesterton on December 19, 1861 by Jno. Peele and became known as Elmwood Springs on January 1, 1865; it remained so until it changed its name to Chestertown on May 6, 1870 when an addition to the Post Office Department allowed for feminine names only (although there had been maleChestertons since 1855). The first school in Chesterton was opened in a log cabin near the river bluff on October 11, 1860 by Revs. Wm Hulbert and Geo Fenton with 12 students from nearby Elmwood Springs. In 1863 Mr. Jno Peele donated land west of present day Mastin Road for a new school which became known as Griggsville School District No 3 No 4; however this school closed in 1966 due to financial problems associated with expanding Granger Township beyond its original boundaries eastward into Morgan County that year. In 1865 Mr John Cramer built a house/farmstead west of Griggsville School District No 4 which became known as "Chesterfield". This house still stands today and is used as an event hall by chestertown events company called The Chesterfield Show Company Incorporated

The Chesterton community was founded in 1868 by John and Eliza Chesterton. The couple first settled in a cabin on the edge of the town square, but soon realized they needed more space. They built a small two-story house on the corner of Fourth and Main Streets. In 1869, they married and started having children. In 1875, they moved to their current location, which they named after their friend Gussie Byrne. The couple continued to grow their home and family until 1920 when John passed away. Eliza continued to live there until her death in 1948. Their home is still standing today and is used as a community center for local kids.
