By 1840, Clarksville had become an important transportation center for central Indiana due to its location on the I-70 corridor. The village had four stores and two hotels before it began to grow rapidly into a larger city with over 10 businesses by 1860. By 1870, Clarksville had become an important commercial center with over 100 businesses including three banks, twelve grocery stores, six dry goods stores and sixteen manufacturing companies.
