In 1812, the United States bought land in what is now Columbus, Indiana from the British. The area was home to a Native American village and the first European settlement in what is now Ohio. By 1814, when Fort Dearborn was built on the current site of State Capitol Square, an army garrison was established to protect the new territory. The first fortifications were not very effective and by 1816, most of Columbus had been destroyed by Creek Indian attacks. A series of larger forts were built over the next few years but they all failed to stop Creek raids or prevent native advances into new territory. In 1818, Major General James K. Polk ordered Lieutenant Colonel David Wilkinson to build a new fortification at present-day State Capitol Square – known as “Fort Knox” – in order to better defend against future Creek attacks. Wilkinson quickly realized that he needed more than just cannons and soldiers to protect his position and so he began building a large system of tunnels and bridges across the Scioto River. The project took two years and cost $20,000 ($660,000 today) but it was one of the largest construction projects in American history. The fortifications were finally completed in October 1819 and became one of America’s major strategic objectives during its war with Mexico). A second fortification developed near where State Capitol Square now stands – called “Fort Wayne” – was also built during this time but it did not have as much success as “Fort Knox” did against Creek attacks. By 1824, however, both forts had been abandoned because they were no longer effective against attacking Indians and so Congress decided to sell them off to various private owners. The United States Army was founded in 1775, and the first military unit to be raised in Columbus was the 1st Battalion of The Indiana Regiment. The 1st Battalion of The Indiana Regiment was later renamed the 7th Infantry Regiment, and served as part of the 8th Infantry Brigade during World War I. Finally, after almost two centuries of exploration and colonization by Europeans in America, Christopher Columbus died on October 11th 1504 at age 48 years old after being shipwrecked off Christmas Island.
