The first attempt at roasting coffee was made in 1795 by Nicholas Mercier and his brother-in-law, Pierre L'Estrange. The brothers started small with two sacks of beans each. By 1802, they had opened a larger business and began shipping their beans all over the US. In 1805, they moved to what is now known as the Mercier House on State Street (now part of the University of Notre Dame). The house still stands and provides tours of its history every other year during Halloween. At one point, Columbus was home to more than one roaster/marketer of fresh roasted coffee. This situation changed around 1840 when Nathan Rowntree founded his own company called New England Coffee Company. At that time, roasters began importing whole bean coffee from different parts of Europe at an affordable price tag. This allowed Columbus residents access to high quality coffee at an easy cost which helped keep their economy strong during difficult times. Over time, immigrants started arriving in large numbers in Columbus and starting their own businesses within the city limits: laundry machines were invented here; ice cream was first sold from carts; bread was baked on open fires until electric ovens became common; etcetera (see History of Columbus). All these new businesses brought about new flavors and styles of coffee that not only influenced how people lived but also how it was consumed – throughout much of America today’s cup cultures we continue this “microcosm” style where neighborhoods have their own unique cafes that specialize mostly in single origin coffees or ales from specific regions (trees having a significant impact on flavor profile – see JavaScript Coffee)). This period also saw some great advances in technology that allowed for finer grounds handling such as burr grinder equipment and automatic brewing systems which gave rise to what is now known as espresso culture (an Ethiopian influence) with its highly skilled baristas responsible for making perfect espresso drinks using complex methods including hand dripping milk into brew baskets before being served through tall metal spouts atop raised platforms heated by direct current AC electricity).
