In 1512, Christopher Columbus discovered the New World. He named the land America after his vessel, the Santa Maria. The first European to settle in what is now Indiana was French explorer and captain Francois Varennes. He explored what is now central Indiana in 1609-1610 and named it for Louis XII of France. In 1611, Varennes' successor, René de Laudonnier, also explored central Indiana and made a discovery that would later be called the Laetoli Plateau. French traders and explorers followed in De Laudonnier's footsteps in early seventeenth century and began to exploreIndiana's rich resources such as coal, lead, saltpeter and iron ore. By 1685-1686, Englishman John Butler had reached present day Evansville but did not sail into its harbor; he anchored his ship on the shore at Logansport while supplies were unloaded from two shipswrecked off the coast of Indiana. As he watched settlers disembark from one of these ships—supplies for his new settlement at Westville—he decided to naming this new place for Butler himself: Fort Butler (later Indianapolis). The area around Fort Butler quickly became known as "Indianapolis," because so much trade took place along its banks between Native Americans and Europeans. The first permanent European settler in what is now Indianapolis was Nicholas Oudolfus who arrived with a group of Dutch colonists in 1675–76. Oudolfus named his settlement New Amsterdam after King George II of England who had granted him a charter for this purpose by royal proclamation on July 1st of that year (OSHE 3/4/1675). After years of trading with Native American groups on both sides of the Ohio River, some Dutch traders built their own settlements along Castle creek near where today's downtown Indianapolis stands (New Amsterdam Creek), while others founded smaller villages farther west nearpresent day Lafayette (Castletown). Starting about 1700 there were also sporadic incursions by Canadian fur trappers into Indian country; however no major settlements were established until 1701 when Pierre Antoine Cadillac led an expedition across Michigan Territory which included a crossing over the river Des Moines south of present day Lafayette to find natural gas reserves within Decatur County; he called this site Gasconade County Estates (the name stayed until 1817 when it was changed to Indianapolis)). It wasn't until 1787 that General James Wolfe defeated General Anthony Wayne at Battle Of Fallen Timbers outside the town then called Sackville Township northwest of downtown Indy on August 25th duringmobility operations stage III operation code name "Vinegar Hill" that started American Revolutionary War against British forces commanded by Lieutenant Colonel Henry Clinton under orders from George Washington which ended with British surrender at Yorktown on October 19th four days later primarily due to superior firepower provided by cannon brought overland by pioneer troops under commandof Major General David Wooster instead of using native warriors as intended! The first European to set foot in what is now Columbus, Indiana was the Spanish conquistador Hernando de Soto in 1538. After landing on the modern-day shore of Lake Michigan and exploring the area, he made a map of the region which he submitted to King Philip II of Spain. The king ordered his expedition led by Christopher Knight to explore this new landmass. Knight's group reached what is today known as Fountainhead after intersecting with another group exploring this part of the world. Columbus' original goal may have been trade or exploration, but his arrival has helped shape Indiana's history and culture. He is credited with helping bring Christianity to this area and giving rise to its many industries such as shipping, agriculture, engineering, and manufacturing.
