By 1840, there were more than 20 shops selling coffee across central Ohio. By 1850, Columbus had become an important center for Dutch-owned plantations outside of Philadelphia due to its proximity to railroads and trading opportunities. Dutch interests continued to produce coffee until after World War II when they switched their focus to soybeans. Coffee production returned to Ohio during the late 1960s and 1970s thanks to advancements in technology which allowed for better roasting techniques and increased yields per acre. The following year he sailed northward again and caught sight of what is now Quebec City, Canada before sailing eastward through the Strait of Juan de Fuca to chart a course for Asia. After reaching Japan in November 1513 he laid down plans for an inland sea route from Europe to China by way of Central Asia and Alaska. However these plans never came to fruition because Spanish Admiral Ponce De León destroyed his fleet off Cuba on May 5th, 1514 while beingcarrying supplies across the Caribbean Sea
