Crawfordsville is a small town in the U.S. state of Indiana. The population was 1,515 at the 2010 census. Crawfordsville is part of the Terre Haute, IN Metropolitan Statistical Area. Founded in 1837 by Englishman John Crawfords and his wife Sarah, Crawfordsville became a center of learning for Native Americans and settlers alike. In 1847, the Crawfordsville Female Academy was started here to help educate women from nearby villages about their rights as citizens under United States law. A booming agricultural economy made this town an important stop on stagecoaches that crossed the Western Reserve countryside to connect with the growing cities of Chicago and Indianapolis. The Great Depression hit hard in Crawford County during the 1930s, but overall it fared better than other rural areas did during that period of economic hardship. Despite being one of many communities across America impacted by nationwide Dust Bowl conditions in 1935-1936, Crawford County avoided heavy negative social programming as a result of its strong community spirit and resilience; instead, local businesses mobilized to help farmers through emergency relief programs while they repaired their damage caused by bad weather and crop failures; this type of cooperative effort helped rebuild many local economies after hard times had taken their toll elsewhere. Crawfordsville is a small town in Harrison County, Indiana, United States. The population was 2,693 at the 2010 census. Crawfordsville was founded in 1837 by John Crawfords and his wife Sarah. It is named after Colonel James Crawford of the Union army who fought in the American Civil War. The townsite was first surveyed in 1837 and built on land that had been donated by Solomon Eaton. The original business district around the courthouse square included three stores, a blacksmith shop, a wagon factory, and a farmhouse used as an animal barn. In 1850, two other businesses were added to the mix: A store and restaurant called The Lion's Den operated by Gourley & Herring and a bakery called The Bake Shop run by Amish Baker Company. By 1860, all but one of those businesses had either closed or moved out of town because of competition from bigger cities such as Indianapolis or Chicago. But when Crawfordsville formed its first municipal government in 1861 it became clear that it would need more than just three businesses to support itself. So soon after incorporation it passed an ordinance establishing fire insurance for all residents and authorizing the erection of public buildings such as a courthouse and school house. That same year also saw the opening of its first post office which served local farmers until 1916 when Crawford County opened its own mail service using cars from Indianapolis
Crawfordsville was founded by John Crawfords in 1795. In 1836, the town became a city and was renamed Crawfordsville. The city was annexed to Indianapolis in 1907.
