Crawfordsville is a small town in central Indiana, located on the banks of the Dearborn River. The population was 996 at the 2010 census. It was founded in 1824 by John Crawford and his wife Hannah. Crawfordsville became a village in 1875, and a city in 1907. The community is named for Colonel John Crawford, who fought with General Lewis Cass during the American Revolution. Colonel Crawford donated land to the village for development, and he also served as its first mayor. He died in 1793. Another pioneer in Crawfordsville was Samuel Hogg, who built a sawmill here in 1814. When settlers arrived here, they were greeted by fertile farmland and rolling hills that offered plenty of hunting and fishing opportunities. Today, much of the original architecture from earlier times remains: The old courthouse (built c 1830), the private homes of many of its residents (including several dating back to before 1800), and several churches including St Andrew's Episcopal Church (established 1863) are all significant examples of early architecture in this settlement.
