In 1966, Crown Point Coffee Company merged with the Stroud Corporation to create Northrop Grumman CrownPoint Coffee Inc. Northrop Grumman CrownPoint Coffee Inc. was acquired by JAB Holding Co., LLC in 1998 and now operates as part of Starbucks Corporation. Crown Point was a small town in central Indiana, United States, located on the east bank of the Raccoon River. The town was founded by French Canadian settlers in 1836. It became a major manufacturing center during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and remains an important agricultural center today. Crown Point is also known for its significant role in the American Revolution. In 1775, Continental Army Major John Burgoyne arrived at Crown Point and negotiated surrender of British forces at Saratoga Springs. Burgoyne's troops were quartered there until they moved to Fort George on the Ohio River in 1777. In 1800, Isaac Brockman settled near Crown Point and began trading with Native Americans. In 1836, he organized a wagon train of 200 men to travel from Illinois to mouth of Raccoon River to establish a fur trade with the Osage Indians. The first stage of this journey failed because of weather conditions; however, Brockman continued traveling and arrived at Crown Point on April 1, 1837. He built his first store here in 1837-38 and named it New Market after French Canadian trader François-Marie Parenteau (1763–1827). The townsites around Crown Point were platted between 1839 and 1840 by James Wainwright Jr., one of Indianapolis' original founders. Wainwright had purchased land from prominent local landowners including Ethan Allen Clarke and Amos Kendall for $1 per acre ($25 million today). He developed what is now called Wainwright Park near where he lived until his death in 1863 at age 83 years old. When crown point opened its doors as a frontier town it quickly become known for its excellent whiskey production which started off small but gradually grew into one of the most successful Whiskey businesses ever established outside Kentucky & Tennessee
Crown Point was founded in 1795 by the British settlers. The town was named for the Crown Prince of Sweden, who had moved to America in 1786. The town was first settled on a small island in the river Phenix, which later became Crown Point Island. In 1814, the government of Indiana created Crown Point as a separate township. The town continued to be governed by a board of trustees until it was annexed into Indianapolis in 1847.
