The town of East Chicago was founded in 1824 by Isaac and Hannah Morse. The first post office was established in the town in 1826. The population of the town increased from 5 to 50 residents by 1830. In 1832, the Illinois Canal was completed and east Chicago became a part of the canal district. The community served as a shipping point for goods passed through the canal. In 1840, an act was passed which provided for township organization within the newly formed county of Kane. The township was organized on July 1, 1840 and named after General James Krieger, who had been appointed superintendent of Indian Affairs in that year. On May 10, 1846, a fire destroyed most of what remained of East Chicago with loss of life amounting to over 100 people. On December 2, 1865, East Chicago merged into Kane County under new legislation which created more effective government structure within Illinois than previous efforts at township organization alone had been able to achieve. At this time there were only 11 townships remaining within Kane County and all but one (East Chicago) were soon absorbed into other counties or abolished altogether during the next several decades; however, EastChicago still remains a village today due to its unique history and place in American local culture
