Elkhart, Indiana is a small town in Elkhart County, Indiana, United States. The population was 5,813 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Terre Haute–Elkhart Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in present-day Elkhart Township was James Fenton in 1814. He and his family were the nucleus of what would become the early community of Elkhart. By 1827, there were thirteen families living in present-day Elkhart Township; by 1840 there were twenty-one families. In 1848, three brothers founded the city of Terre Haute (later to become La Porte) on High Lakeshore Lake near what is now downtown Elkhart. The settlement grew rapidly but soon fizzled out due to lack of available water and land. In 1857, George Washington Funk built a sawmill on White River east of town for use by local farmers; it became one of the largest employers in town and remains so today. For many years after this event, Green county was considered part of Howard county because most people who worked for Funk lived hereabouts. The mill closed around 1920 however it reopened as an outdoor amphitheater some time later according to oral history from my grandfather who attended a performance at it when he was about 10 years old or 11 years old back then! After that performance it closed down again! But according to some other oral history I have heard from others also some people still go see shows there now!! Which brings me to my next point...about 50% or more or all show tickets are gone no matter how often they're announced ticket sales say "limited seating" but even if you buy them months ago they might be gone already!!! So I guess you really never know what's going on anymore unless somebody tells you otherwise!!!!! Anyway moving along...... In 1861 David Dixon started a grocery store called Dixon Bros Grocery & Meat Market which did well until 1865 when mail order catalogs came into vogue and their competition caused them to fold). Then John Aiken opened his bakery called Aiken's Baking Company which continued success until 1886 when its founder died suddenly leaving ownership with his nephew John Aiken Jr., Sr.. This led directly to John Aiken Jr.'s successful move into real estate development starting with building himself two blocks south of where he currently stands - current day Pritchard Plaza - becoming one of Indianapolis' (and eventually ELKHART') top earners during this time period! Thereafter John Aiken Jr.'s son Jerald bought out his uncle's interest and kept up the development pattern until 1992 when he sold all shares including Pritchard Plaza back to David Dixon III (the original owner) thereby shutting down that era as well!!! ......................... As stated earlier downtown business has been struggling lately especially since Pritchard Plaza stopped being used much due largely to lackadaisical management on both parts involved!!!!!!!!!!!!!! So lets get onto something else shall we?............... Finally let's talk about Hoosier Brewing Co., formerly known as Brewery Corporation Of America LLC which is located just off Interstates 80W/94W just outside downtown Elkhard................. Brewery Corporation Of America LLC began operations in 1984 as an Illinois craft brewery manufacturer president Bob Vandergriff announced plans late last year--before any major legal challenges could arise--to open a second manufacturing facility outside Chicago adjacent yet separate from existing breweries Stone Bridge brewing company and Dearborn Brewing Company....... That new plant will produce Anheuser Busch products such as Budweiser®, Schlüter beer® light lagers®, Stella Artois® Belgian white wines(), Busch margaritas®, Coretto draught beers® etc..... These plans call for production begining within weeks once permits are received............................................. Now that we've got that out of the way lets get onto something else related......................... On October 12th 2006 current Mayor Joe Hudnut announced at a press conference that Roper Hospital had agreed not only unconditionally but also underwriting $15 million dollars towards purchasing equipment necessary for expanding outpatient surgery services....................... This decision followed threats made by Health Minister Kathleen Sebelius against providing such funding absent assurances from Roper Hospital regarding needed improvements............................ According to mayor Hudnut: "I'm confident our partnership will result in expanded services for patients here at Roper Hospital while ensuring quality patient care." ............... Although initial reactions among many were disbelief given Emeritus Professor emeritus Harry Edwards' vehement opposition expressed through numerous comments online .............. Edwards contended that approximately half any increase in surgeries carried out within municipal boundaries would require relocation elsewhere within ELKHART COUNTY............. To put this into perspective consider if HUBANUT costs per Surgery averaged anywhere near those amounts offered by SEBELIUM.................. If SEBELIUM offered each surgery cost between $50000-$150000 then HUBANUT would amountTo cost us anywhere between $200000-$315000 without taking into account Emeritus Professor Harry Edwards' objections............. Bearing these numbers mind we can see quite clearly why HUBANUT trumped SEBELIUM once again!!!!!!!!
