It grew rapidly during the late 1800s and early 1900s as a result of its location, access to water resources, and its status as an agricultural center. The City of Elkhart was founded on November 3, 1824 by fur traders from Russia and other parts of Central Asia who were looking for land to settle after their journey across Siberia. The original village sat on what is now Northwestern Side Road (currently owned by Purdue University). In 1830, two brothers named John Fenton and Gideon Peck organized a company to purchase land in what is now downtown Elkhart from the government for $4 per acre. The Fenton brothers quickly developed businesses in lumbering, farming, shipping goods downriver to Chicago via steamboats, etc., which gave them wealth beyond their wildest dreams. They also built one of America's first brick buildings - a meeting hall known today as First National Bank - in 1831. However, settlement did not stop until after fortuitous events led General George Armstrong Custer his army into Battle Creek on October 25th-27th1846 while traveling through central Illinois on his way towards War Department headquarters at Fort Wayne. This event helped open up area south of Elkhart for farming because traffic stopped then instead coming up river all the way through Michigan State Prison at Terre Haute before continuing downriver past Clintonville where it joined with Black Ripple Creek (now White Marsh) just north of present day Elkhart making for easy travel between these areas without stopping or being blocked by trees or hillsides blocking passage!
