This allowed them to build a gristmill on the current site of First National Bank (now called City Hall). This mill continued to operate until it burned down in 1900. A post office was established at Elkhart in 1840, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907. The settlement grew rapidly due to agricultural production; by 1860, there were more than 100 families living here. At this time, many local businesses were based around Grains Mill (now called Pioneer Village), which produced flour for local markets as well asexportations into nearby cities such as Indianapolis and Chicago. By 1870, industrial growth had begun to take hold; new factories were built along old railroad lines just south of town limits. Mining also began operations in this vicinity; by 1875 there were two small mines operating north of town near present-day North Park Avenue/State Road 511* * These mines remain active today but are no longer owned or operated by any individual company: they are collectively known as “Old Home Mines”

When night fell they built a small fire and cooked their dinner before getting up to go back to their unit. A NWP bandit attacked them and two officers were killed while trying to protect their comrades; this event helped start fights between Native Americans and white settlers which would continue for many years. One account says that General Wilkinson ordered his men not to fight because he knew there would be more deaths if they did so than if they just walked away: "And as he spoke these words his carbine flashed from hand to hand among his soldiers... as it seemed certain that some casualty must follow" The first store opened in this area was called the Market House on Main Street about 1846 by Wm E Hargrave who operated it with eight other stores before closing it down due to financial difficulties around 1870. One early resident of Elkhart was Captain George Stephenson who served as Commandant of Fort Granger during much of the War Betweenthe States; he arrived here circa 1840 or 1841 when Fort Granger became known as Vincennes Arsenal following its capture by Ulysses S Grant during the war.
