The Indiana Army National Guard was founded on July 1, 1898 as the 5th Infantry Regiment. The regiment served until it was disbanded in 1907. On February 14, 1916, the regiment was reactivated and raised to a brigade level under command of General John J. Pershing. The brigade participated in World War I and the Mexican-American War. It mustered out of service on November 30, 1921. After the war, the regiment became an artillery unit and served in that capacity during World War II before being activated again for duty in Korea in 1951. It mustered out of service on August 15, 1953. The regiment remained inactive until it was reactivated on October 1, 1975 as 3rd Battalion (7th Infantry) Regiment Indiana Army National Guard at Fishers Municipal Airport with Headquarters at 4100 E State Road 915. The battalion conducted operations from that location untilactivated again on January 2nd 1979 as 2nd Battalion (5th Infantry) Regiment Indiana Army National Guard at Fishers Municipal Airport with Headquarters at 4000 E State Road 920A/B which is now known as Brigade Headquarters Ground Floor/Dormitory Tower Annex A/B
