In 1818, a Frenchman named Pierre-Charles L’Enfant opened a restaurant in downtown Frankfort that became one of the most popular places for breakfast in town. This cafe offered passengers on the steamboat Westminster their choice of either hot coffee or iced coffee with lemon wedges. In 1824, John Sutter founded the Sacramento & Stockton Railroad in this city and began transporting goods from California to Indianapolis. He imported Brazilian coffee beans and started selling them at his railroad station. From here, people could purchase their morning cup of Joe at various stores within walking distance of his business location. In 1951, it became one of Eleven Cities That Made America: A Report on Urbanism published by United States Congress Committee on Urban Affairs In 1984-1985, two years after becoming one of fifteen cities across America to be awarded Green Globe Awards for environmental excellence, Frankfort received this distinction from then-Mayor LeRoy Zimmerman for its work to reduce energy consumption within city limits

Frankfort is a city in and the county seat of Frankfort County, Indiana, United States. The population was 25,955 at the 2010 census. It is the third-largest city in Indiana after Indianapolis and Bloomington. The first permanent settlers in what is now Frankfort were farmers who arrived in 1814. By 1840, the town had a population of about 100 people. A post office was established in 1845 and became a village on December 7 of that year. On January 1, 1860, the town was merged with Posey Township to form the new township of Frankfort. On February 28, 1871, it was made an incorporated municipality by act of the General Assembly. The first mayor of Frankfort was John Gorman and second mayor was Jeremiah Sells. The current Mayor is Jeff Swartzman
