Frankfort is a city in and the county seat of Frankfort County, Indiana, United States. The population was 936 at the 2010 census. Frankfort was founded by fur traders in 1785 as the trading post of Fort Dearborn on the east side of what is now downtown Frankfort. It grew rapidly as a result of its location on the great Northwest Territories acquisition in 1803 and its annexation by Kentucky in 1827. In 1846, it became an incorporated town when all of central Indiana became one state. It experienced rapid growth during World War II due to heavy industrial production; it reached 1 million people by 1945. After the war, however, decline set in as industry disappeared and crime rates increased. The city has made some significant progress since then, including becoming one of central Indiana's most vibrant cultural attractions. However, continued economic difficulty has led to increased gentrification and displacement of low-income residents; this has resulted in protests and community organizing against development projects within the city limits. The historical center of Frankfort is a small area bounded by Second Street on the north, Third Street on the east, State Avenue on the south (the original site of present-day Central Park), and Washington Avenue on the west side that contains a mix of restored historic buildings from various periods and contemporary architecture from several firms including Foster + Partners LLC., Skidmore Owings & Merrill LLP., Cook + Associates LLP., Pei Cobb Freed Inc., and Helmut Jahn Architects LLC.; as well as new construction such as Old Capitol Building (now home to Fenton County Courthouse) which replaced an earlier structure built for government offices dating back to 1809. Frankfort is a small town in central Indiana, United States. The population was 2,622 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Kosciusko County. The name "Frankfort" comes from the French word for "hill". The first European settlers in what is now Frankfort were French Canadian noblemen and their families who arrived in 1795. They named their new community after one of their number, François-René de Montcalm, Marquis de Lafayette. The original courthouse building was completed in 1811 and served as the legal center for Kosciusko County until 1846 when the county seat moved to Indianapolis. The city of Frankfort was officially incorporated on December 8, 1890. At that time it had a population of just over 100 people and consisted of a few frame buildings and a couple of stores. In 1915, the city annexed part of neighboring Kosciusko County and its population grew rapidly; by 1920 it had reached 3,000 residents. During World War II, Frankfort was an important manufacturing center for munitions production due to its location within easy reach of major ammunition plants located in nearby Kokomo and Lafayette. In 1941, General Motors built a plant here that produced Buick vehicles until 1957 when GM Pullman factories were opened in nearby Crown Point and Assembly line operations transferred to Frankfort from Kokomo (now Kokomo Township). In recent years, some job losses have been offset by recently founded businesses such as 4 Corners Pizza & Pasta which replaced an existing fast food restaurant in downtown Frankfort with plans to open multiple locations throughout the community over time; this has helped contribute to significant growth across all aspects of life here since 2006 including art galleries popping up all around town (such as Underground Gallery), bars/pubs opening up shop late into the night (!), more than 20 churches services being offered each week (averaging more than 400 participants each month!), dating back to 1892 having started out operated only as religious classes back then...This vibrant mix results not only helps keep things moving but also provides plenty opportunity for people from various walks of life to get involved with one another - something we take seriously!
