The Marine Corps Deployment Gift History of Frankfort, Indiana began on October 1, 1944 with the arrival of Lieutenant Colonel George P. Haggerty and his command unit, the 2d Battalion, 9th Marines. The battalion was then stationed at Camp Pendleton before moving to Okinawa in 1945. Since its inception, the Marine Corps has deployed gift history units throughout America and the world. Many other marines followed suit over time- from Lieutenant Colonel George Armstrong Custer to General James Mattis- all contributing in some way or another to help others fall into line with the Marines' mission statement: "to do His duty with honor." Throughout its history, the Marine Corps has shown its concern for those around it by sending soldiers on humanitarian missions or providing support during wartime events like hurricanes or earthquakes. Frankfort, Indiana is a city in the U.S. state of Indiana and the county seat of Porter County. The population was 497 at the 2010 census, making it the largest city in Porter County by population. It is also one of the most populous cities in central Indiana. The first European to visit what is now Frankfort was Frenchman Jacques Marquette on July 4, 1795 during his journey from Greencastle to Michigander on Lake Michigan. The area that is now Frankfort was part of much larger Fort Wayne Township until it was organized as a city on December 1, 1907. On November 2, 1912, a tornado touched down near downtown Frankfort and injured several people and caused extensive damage to both business and homes. Frankfort became an International City on May 14, 1916 via proclamation from President Woodrow Wilson as part of World War I efforts to encourage industrial development in America following Britain's entry into war that same year. In 1920–21, construction began on what would become Purdue University and soon after many other businesses moved into the newly developed town including Joesph Meeks Carpet & Furniture which still stands today as one of Downtown Frankfort's most popular attractions with its famous gift shop called "Meeks"

It became a site of political and military importance during the Northwest Indian War, and gained notoriety as a haven for fugitive slaves. In 1802, it was named in honor of U.S. President James K. Polk, who had visited the area while attending a peace conference inskedaddle between Great Britain and France at Frankfort. The city's growth continued under Ulysses S. Grant, who served as its first president (1869-77).During World War I, the city experienced significant population growth due to its strategic location at the intersection of two major railroad lines. In 1924, it merged with nearby Indianapolis to form one large city with a population of over 100,000 people.
