Franklin, Indiana is one of the most historically rich communities in the United States. The area has been inhabited by humans for over 10,000 years and contains some of the oldest evidence of human settlements in the Midwest. The first European to visit Franklin was Jesuit Father Pierre Nicolas de La Salle in 1679. Over time, various groups of people have settled in Franklin, including French colonists from Quebec in 1763 and British colonists from Virginia in 1803. In 1830, the town was annexed by Indianapolis, making it a part of that city. In 1847, Franklin became part of Hamilton County when that county was formed from parts of Marion and Hendricks counties. The population decreased during World War II because so many residents served in military service. However, the population increased after the war due to new development and growth within the city limits. Today, Franklin is a thriving community with a rich history that can be enjoyed by all who live there.

Franklin, Indiana is a small town in Northwest Indiana located on the banks of the White River. The population was 3,564 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Terre Haute, IN Metropolitan Statistical Area. Franklin was founded in 1821 by General James Wilkinson and his family. The name of Franklin comes from George Washington's home at Mount Vernon in Virginia. In 1827, Wilkinson donated land to create a township and named it after himself, Franklin Township. The first post office was established in 1829 in this township. In 1830, Franklins erected a gristmill on the riverbank which became their primary source of income until 1862 when they built a new mill on the other bank upstream. By 1865, all but one of their mills had been destroyed by flooding due to heavy rains that season; however, they rebuilt all but one within three years thanks to donations from local farmers and citizens alike. This community prospered until 1915 when white flight began to occur as waves of settlers left for states with more available farmland during World War I. With only 2% of its population remaining by 1930, Franklin filed for bankruptcy protection and was subsequently abandoned by its original occupants who moved away or died during the Great Depression or World War II respectively). Today most residents are employed outside the town limits through educational institutions such as West Lafayette Community College (WLC) and Purdue University-Purdue University Indianapolis (PUI). The history of Franklin begins with Benjamin Franklin, who moved from England to America in 1795 to find a new home for his family. At first he settled in Philadelphia but soon after moved to post office business on the banks of the Ohio River. He started a paper trade as an apprentice and eventually became one of the most famous printers in Philadelphia. After some years he decided to move back to America and start anew, this time settling near what is now known as downtown Indianapolis. At first he rented space on Broadway Street but soon began purchasing property himself, making it his own town center which still exists today! For many years he was also publisher of The Independence Gazette which served as an early example of how newspapers were developed here! In 1814, when Congress created Indiana Territory from parts of Illinois and Kentucky, Franklin’s colony at 2nd Creek (now Scottsboro) on the eastern edge of what is now Marion County was included within that territory along with land belonging to David Rittenhouse and others including James Kappeler (founder of Fort Wayne), George Rogers Clark (founder of Cincinnati), Solomon Grundy (founderof Terre Haute), John Stroud ( founderof Evansville), Nicholas-Jacques Conte (founderof Carmel), Jonathan Edwards (Divergentist preacher turned politician) & others! This territory would later become part of central Indiana! In 1816, when Indiana Territory was organized into counties and then townships – all overseen by county sheriffs – Columbus Township contained only about 6 settlers out OFFROAD OF THE OHIO River!!! When company buildings began being erected east OFFROAD OF THE river they were necessary so people could work AND live within easy access too!! However large percentage OF THESE CONSTRUCTION WORKERS WERE BLACKAMERICAN MEN WORKING ON BUILDINGS FOR WHITE EMPLOYEES ONLY!!!!!! Many black men worked continuously until 1865 when laws were passed requiring them NOT TO WORK ANY LONGER DURING THAT TIME!!!!! So much for “the color line”……….. Black workers continued working even AFTER LAW ENFORCEMENT WAS PERMITTED TO STOP IT !!! From this point forward white men increasingly owned most businesses while black men labored informally oruphemistically behind closed doors !! Continued discrimination against blacks followed through until well into the 20th century !
