The Coast Guard was established in 1921 in Gary, Indiana as the Volunteer Fire Department. The department's first station was a small shed on the edge of town. In 1922, the volunteer fire department moved to its present location, which is now the City Hall Annex. The first Coast Guard Station in Gary was called “The House on the Hill” and it served as the only fire house in town. The station was destroyed by a storm in 1944 but replaced by a new building that still stands today. In 1951, the Coast Guard became a public agency and began providing services to all residents of Gary. In 1975, an annex was built to serve as the Administration Building for both the Coast Guard and city government. The Annex has been used for various purposes including offices, storage, and even housing over time. Today, it is home to both the Coast Guard Museum and City Hall Administration Suite1 which is alsoGary's primary courthouse.
