As the oldest continuously inhabited town in Indiana, Goshen has a rich maritime history. The early explorers and traders who came to this area were responsible for developing the region's trade interests. The town's first ship was built in 1795 by Captain John Young of the French Company and named La Salle. In 1828, Goshen was chartered as a port city by the Indiana General Assembly. By 1850, Goshen had become one of the leading commercial centers in central Indiana. As Goshen grew more important, it began to dominate local shipping and trade with other states in the Midwest. This prosperity allowed for increased development within the community and led to growth in both its population and economy. The maritime industry continued to play an important role in Goshen during the late 19th century. In 1892, a series of devastating hurricanes caused extensive damage to local businesses and homes. This motivated many entrepreneurs to start new businesses during this difficult time. One such business was J H McNaught & Sons Auctioneers which became one of the most successful auctioneers in central Indiana during this period. During World War I, Goshen played an important role as a naval base providing storage space for military supplies and equipment while also hosting various military events including amphibious assaults on shore positions ashore along Lake Michigan Shoreline During World War II, Goshen again became an important naval base when it became known as Naval Station Indianapolis This station functioned as a training ground for Navy personnel until 1970 when it was closed down due to budget cuts inside America's largest navy fleet headquarters at that time Goshen is still home to several significant maritime businesses today including McNaught Auctioneers (now part of Sotheby's), Smiths Boatbuilding which builds both small sailboats and larger vessels, Wohlschein Salvage which specializes in salvaging obsolete or distressed vessels from underseaowned ports around the country,and Maritimes Inc., which provides marine services related to weddings and family vacations

Goshen is a town in Howard County, Indiana, United States. The population was 5,898 at the 2010 census. Goshen is part of the Indianapolis–Bloomington Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in Goshen was Nicholas Ostermeier in 1814. A post office called Goshen was established in 1827, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1901. In 1853, John Prentice laid out a township on what is now the east side of Goshen Creek. The new town began to grow quickly due to its location and access to railroad transportation. By 1860, Goshen had a population of 1,000 people and had built churches and schools. In 1870, the primary concern of the community became agricultural production; by 1880, there were more than 100 businesses in town. During World War II, Goshen served as an airfield for the Eighth Air Force (later Ninth Air Force). It also hosted several conventions and meetings related to the war effort such as that of the American Legion which took place on July 12th 1944 at Speedway Parkgrounds south of town. Since 2000, much has changed for Goshen with trends toward digital natives like myself who stay connected 24/7 through technology. Goshen, Indiana was founded in 1814 by George Washington and David Ritchie. The town was named after the Goshen School District, which it served until it merged with Fort Wayne in 1914. The first settler in Goshen was John Haughton. By 1827, the population of Goshen had reached 500 people. In 1830, the Erie Canal completed through Goshen and adjacent towns created a new economy that drove growth in Goshen. In 1847, the Central School District was formed and Goshen became part of its structure. When the school district merged with other districts in 1914, Goshen residents voted to name their town after themselves rather than their predecessors’ namesakes. Today, there are more than 20 businesses located in Goshen including four banks and numerous restaurants and bars. The history of Goshene is intertwined with that of Fort Wayne which was established nearby on land donated by General William Henry Harrison in 1814 as a military post for Indiana troops fighting against Native American forces occupying Michigan Territory during the Mexican-American War (1846-48). The fort served as a garrison until it closed down due to budgetary cuts following America’s entry into World War II. However, Fort Wayne has left an enduring legacy on Koshene – both culturally and physically – most notably through its presence within walking distance of both local universities as well as several major shopping malls across metro Indianapolis; one such mall alone has over 50 stores within its boundaries! Today, Hosanna United Methodist Church is one of only two remaining vestiges from when Fort Wayne hosted services at what is now Greenwood Cemetery before moving out altogether for economic reasons around 1900. Additionally, Grant Park – home to several hotels dating back to the early 1800s – can be found just east of downtown between Fifth Street and Seventh Avenue South close to Interstate 65/I-465 (exit 169). This park contains a number of historical landmarks including an 1886 brick courthouse that still stands today and courthouse steps where President Harry S Truman delivered his first address on October 15th 1948 while also hosting Operation Overlord–the Allied invasion of Normandy!
Goshen was founded in 1817 by Nicholas Goshen and his wife Sarah. The town grew rapidly after it was platted on a tract of land that had been part of the large Indiana Territory. In 1827, Goshen became a city. It was designated as the capital of Indiana in 1833 and remains so today.
