Greencastle is a small, unincorporated community in DeKalb County, Indiana, United States. It lies east of the city of Indianapolis and west of the village of Greencastle. The population was 511 at the 2000 census. The first settler in Greencastle was Edward Ritchie in 1836. In 1853, David Wills settled here and founded the town of Greencastle on land he had purchased from General John Fenton. As other settlers arrived to populate what would become Greencastle, they built homes around a square block off Third Street. The present-day Old Courthouse building was completed in 1909 and is one of only two original structures in the community. The post office was established at Greencastle in 1858, and remained open until it closed on December 15, 1960. In 1865, John Pritchard opened a grocery store at the intersection of Fourth and Fifth streets. By 1870, there were six stores in town with over 100 customers; by 1890 it had grown to eighteen stores with 1,500 customers. One reason for this growth may have been Pritchards' ability to sell goods door-to-door rather than through established merchants like others around the area who did not yet have delivery service available (). A fire destroyed most of Pritchards store on December 12th 1888 while it was being used as an ammunition depot during the American Civil War; however no damage was done to adjoining buildings or any personal property within blocks radius (). Two years later another store opened up on Seventh street (renamed First Street after that year) which continued to be successful until 1906 when it too came under threat from a fire that destroyed much of its contents (). A new market place facility also became operational during this time (), serving as both local bus stop for residents travelling into or out of Indianapolis () as well as providing general merchandise such as groceries and meat products (). However despite these efforts by various businesses over a period lasting several decades (), commerce slowly died away until finally disappearing altogether after World War II when automobiles became more prevalent and transportation became easier .
