In 1847, the town took on its present name when it became part of Indiana Territory. The first post office in Greenfield opened in 1848. At that time, the town had a population of just over fifty people. The townspeople developed a strong economy with agriculture being the mainstay of their society until around 1930 when manufacturing began to take hold as well. Manufacturing jobs have been lost throughout most of the 20th century but since 2000, some new businesses have started up here again as local entrepreneurs see an opportunity to grow their businesses within this highly entrepreneurial community
