Military deployments have always been a part of the military culture in Greensburg, Indiana. Greenburg was platted in 1827 by Nicholas H. Dearborn and others as the townsite for what would become Greenburgh Township. In 1835, Greenburgh became a village under the name of "Greenburgh". On May 17, 1839, Greenburgh was renamed to "Greensburg", in honor of General Philip Greensborough (1756-1815), who fought in the American Revolutionary War and later served as military governor of Ohio. The first post office opened in Greensburg on July 3, 1840. In 1845, it merged with nearby Monmouth Township to form Greene Township again.GREENSBURG: A Town History The town of Greensburg was founded by Nicholas H Dearborn on November 8th, 1827 after he realized that much land east of Terre Haute had been taken up by farmers since he had last surveyed the area two years earlier while serving as Surveyor General for Indiana Territory). To make way for this new community Dearborn platted a townsite measuring one-half mile square and named it "Greenburgh". The original town plat included four blocks long and one block wide with a total street width of six feet three inches (2 m). “Dearborn set out to create an educational center within easy reach of his many neighbors and businesses along I-465/I-71 northbound through Indianapolis...he believed that an educator could be both an important factor in improving public morals and also provide opportunities for young people to learn how to read and write." In 1840 when Greenburgh became known as Greensburg due to its merger with neighboring Monmouth Township it boasted just over 100 residents which grew rapidly during the next ten years until 1800 residents resided there including 300 farmers! According to 1880 US Census data; “the population increased rapidly from 100 in 1830…to 478 individuals by 1870” making Greensburg one of Jay County's fastest growing communities! By 1910 census data; “the population had Increased to 1,280 people living […]in structures such as frame buildings or log cabins which ranged from modest frames built near busy roadsides all the way up into high end starter homes” indicating how quickly postwar suburbanization had taken hold throughout central Indiana! Accordingly our history begins with Nicholas H Dearborn who erected his first frame house on October 15th 1830 within sight of present day Happy Valley Elementary School located off I-465/I-71 now known as Eastern Avenue! UnfortunatelySadly not everyone enjoyed peaceful pioneer days like dearborn did however following his death farming continued uninterrupted until after World War II when Interstate 65 took over much arterial transportation bringing more families closer together making life easier for those previously living far removed from civilization!
