The Greenwood Museum of Art is a museum in Greenwood, Indiana. It was founded in 1907, and is the oldest art museum in Northwest Indiana. The museum has an extensive collection of American art from the Revolutionary War to the present day.
Greenwood is a city in the United States. It is the seat of Greenwood Township and is located in southern Indiana. The population was 9,822 at the 2010 census. Greenwood is home to Indiana's only Fortune 500 company, Ingersoll Rand. The first settlers in what became Greenwood were two families from Massachusetts who came overland from New England on July 4, 1788. These settlers named their new village "New Hartford." They were soon joined by others and within a few years, Greenwood had a population of 100 people. In 1817, the first store was built in what is now downtown Greenwood and it served as the town's commercial center until 1838 when a brewery was established which led to its nickname of Brewerytown. The town also saw growth in agriculture with milk production becoming an important factor early on. The turning point for Greenwood came with World War I when many businesses closed due to prohibition laws that were passed at that time. Responding to this need, several entrepreneurs set up shop downtown including Pritchett & Flint Brewing Company and Rinehart Grain & Seed Company which helped revive business activity during wartime shortages. By 1919, all but one of the original buildings had been replaced or converted into modern structures thanks to investments by Mayor John Hargrave Sr.. This period of redevelopment spanned more than 40 years and helped make downtown Greenwood one of America’s most vibrant areas during that time – witness today’s shopping districts like State Street Business District (formerly Third Street) and Market Square – as well as restaurants such as Grille de la Paix (now known as thomas Keller), Joes Pizza Parlor and Joes' Steak House being among its many notable landmarks . As technology advanced throughout the 20th century, so too did Greenwood; during this time, there was growth in both professional servicesjobs such as insurance companies and law firms while also seeing growth in heavy industry including manufacturing plants related to chemicals and plastics . This continued growth brought about some big changes for not just Downtown Green-wood but for surrounding neighborhoods too: In 2000 , Interstate 65 split into three sections near Downtown Green-wood providing an opening for larger businesses adjacent to I-65 rather than having them situated halfway between Downtown Green-wood/I-465and Indianapolis CBD while also creating more opportunities for housing development around I-65 ; another major change took place when First National Bank moved out its operations inside City Hall late last decade leaving much vacant real estate across State Street Business District - making it one of America's most coveted addresses for office space ! streetcar service arrived along Ohio street running parallel to I-65 beginning service on May 7th 1888 causing increased retail transactions taking place near those lines terminus !! Greenwood was founded on November 1, 1836 by James Greenwood and his wife, Harriet. The Greenwood family became the leading landholders in this region and its growth during the antebellum period can be seen in their purchase of over two thousand acres of land. In 1839 they built a log cabin on the site which served as their home until 1857 when they moved to what is now known as the Highland Park district. During this time they also developed an extensive commercial enterprise that included a store, bakery, brewery, post office, school and mill. By 1860 Greenwood had become one of Indiana's largest towns with a population of over four hundred residents. The early years of the twentieth century were difficult for Greenwood as it faced competition from larger cities such as Indianapolis and Chicago. However, through hard work and determination these citizens managed to keep their community afloat until World War I forced them out of business. In 1922 Greenwood became another city when it was annexed by Indianapolis. Although it has experienced some setbacks since then (such as being hit hard by the recession), Greenwood has nonetheless managed to remain an important part of Indiana history
