In Greenwood, Indiana, gun gift history goes back to 1847. That year, the first gun shop in the city opened its doors. It was called the Gun Affaire and sold only rifles and pistols. The store was run by a man named John Hagerty and his wife, Sarah. The couple had two children- one of whom became an NRA member and helped start the local chapter of that organization. The other child also became involved in firearms sales and kept track of their parents’ shop's inventory. Betsy Ziegler is credited with being the first female firearm owner in Greenwood. Betsy purchased her first handgun from Mr. Hagerty when she was just 16 years old. She continued to buy guns until she turned 21 in 1875. At that point, she acquired her own business- The Pistol Shop- which continued to sell handguns until it closed its doors in 1903. After Ms Ziegler's death, her son Harry took over her business and continued to sell handguns until he too closed his store in 1914 (although he still has some artifacts remaining from this time). In 1946, Charlie Steele started selling shotguns here at The Pistol Shop after moving from Chicago Heights, Illinois where he had been selling firearms since 1924 (and later founded Steele Firearms & Ammunition). Steele's store continues to be open today as a retailer of hunting weapons as well as shotguns and pistols!
