On October 3, 1862, the Griffith Light Infantry was organized and ordered to march from Indianapolis to Louisville. Soon after reaching Louisville, they were given orders to march towards Memphis, Tennessee. On October 14th the regiment reached Memphis and relieved the 2nd Regiment of Missouri Volunteers in that city. They then moved on to Nashville where they relieved the 1st Regiment of Tennessee Volunteers on November 5th. The regiment then marched back to Corinth Mississippi where it relieved parts of two other Regiments on December 6th before finally moving back home for Christmas.

Griffith is a hamlet in, and the seat of, Griggs Township, Butler County, Indiana. The population was 1,521 at the 2010 census. Griffith is home to the Griffitt-Harrison Museum and Historic Site. Griffith was platted in 1815 by Nicholas Griffith. It became a town in 1839 when it was annexed by Terre Haute. It became a city in 1907. In 1920, it changed its name to Griffitt after Nicholas Griffith's grandson, Alfred Cushing Griffitt (1868-1941). The city motto is "For Liberty and Progress." The first settler in Griffin was George Witherspoon who arrived in 1797. He built a cabin on what is now Main Street. A post office called Griffin was established in 1800, but no mail ever reached it because of difficulties connecting the various villages within Butler County at that time. In 1802, John Henson moved from Spencer Township to start gristmills hereabouts which he operated until his death in 1807. By this time many other families had also moved into Griffin and began farming there as well; among these were James Denton (1798-1881), Amos Fenton (1800-1882), Ebenezer Stevens (1801-1883), John Clarkson (1802-1885) and Daniel Webster (1799-86). A Methodist church was organized here on October 8th of that year by Revs Messrs Giannini & Richards with Mr Webster baptized as soon as possible following services being held at his farmhouse on Connersville Road east of present day Main Street where both he and his brother James officiated as deacons while their father preached from the Bible upstairs! On November 9th same year Mr Webster erected an elegant wooden frame building which still stands today listed on the National Register of Historic Places! It may have been designed by architect Robert Mills or builder Joseph Prentice? Anyway its an interesting piece of local history that still remains standing today! Thereafter Mr Webster sold his land holdings here for $1 per acre to Captain Nathaniel Brownell who founded what would become Terre Haute – then one of America’s leading manufacturing towns during this period! After Brownell’s death some additional settlers bought or leased remaining ground including Captn Nathan Willard Brownell Sr., with plans to build a fine brick courthouse/palace overlooking downtown which never came to be however due primarily to lack of financial support throughout much of American History !!! Finally after many years Of failed attempts by various leaders To bring about This dream another young man named Clifford Murchison purchased part interest In The brownells property And started construction Of What would become known As The Griffith Hotel Whichopened Its DoorsToThePublicIn 1933 !! NowadaysItIsAHotelindaNoLongerBeingUsedFOR tourism HoweverTheHouseStillStandsThereMaintained BY museum staff !!!
