Griffith is a town in Putnam County, Indiana, United States. The population was 1,981 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Evansville metropolitan area. Griffith was founded on November 15, 1810 by Welsh immigrants who named it after Griffiths Crossroads in Bridgwater Township, Worcestershire, England. Griffith's early growth was based upon its location as a crossroads and transportation hub between Evansville and rural Putnam County. The community experienced rapid growth during the late 19th century as railroads penetrated central Indiana and trade increased along the Stroudsburg-Carbondale line. A public school system was established in Griffith in 1876 and became a model for later schools across central Indiana. In 1905, the first automobile dealership opened in Griffith—the only such business in Indiana at that time. During World War II, large numbers of Japanese American detainees were interned at Fort Monmouth near Perth Amboy, New Jersey; many of these individuals had to work on farms or provide services to support their families back home. Many residents of Griffith took up collection drives to help feed these troops during the war years; one such drive generated over $2 million dollars for local programs within 10 years. Following World War II, much industrial activity stopped operations in central Indiana due to productivity gains from new technology; however, Griffith retained significant manufacturing sector presence until the early 21st century when it lost most of its industry to globalization and other technological advances throughout Indianapolis alone. Today's economy is driven by tourism and farming activities; both sectors have seen growth since 2000 amidst low consumer demand across many industries nationally throughout America (see also "What makes Griffth so great?"). This building burned down October 13th 1922 but left behind a large ingrain sinker type irrigation system used extensively nowdays called Grifths Gulch Pond water tower." Another interesting buildings that developed around this time were two gas stations which sat on what is now known as Main Street west side (now part of Morningside Drive)." These gas stations provided fuel for cars going into town," they also sold souvenirs such as postcards etcetera ." They operated until around 1970."
Griffith was founded in 1827 by James W. Griffith, a landowner and canal builder. The town grew rapidly, thanks to the growth of the Indianapolis Canal and Railroad Company, which built a railroad through Griffith in 1881. The population of Griffith reached 10,000 by 1890. In 1907, the town incorporated as a city. Today, Griffith is an agricultural community with a small population.
