Highland, Indiana is a small town located in Porter County,Indiana. It is the county seat of Porter County and has a population of around 20,000 people. Highland was first settled in 1814 by Scots-Irish immigrants. The town was named for Highlanders who were living in Scotland at the time. The post office was established in 1815, and the first store opened on December 4th of that year. Highland became a borough in 1906 and then an incorporated village in 1908. The population of Highland peaked at 2700 in 1960 but has since declined modestly. Today, Highland rests mostly within the boundaries of Porter County government with some scatteredresidential neighborhoods scattered throughout its territory. The current mayor of Highlands is Jeffrey Silliman with term expiring at the end of 2020. Highlands State Bank is headquartered here and also serves as one of the primary economic engines driving much of what lies within its borders including retail sales, professional services, housing developments (primarily single family homes), manufacturing, agriculture and more recently technology companies such as Amazon Web Services and Facebook headquarters which all operate outposts inside or near shopping malls anchored by Sears Holdings stores across nearby Hoffman Estates mall serving as anchors for various hinterlands included portions bordering Indiana University Kokomo campus adjacent to Montero Landfill industrial park containing over 30 tankers/day storage tanks used for oil refining & other related activities this interchange also provides access to I-465 from I-65 just east Of town Highland’s economy depends largely upon its location within Porter County because most jobs are clustered here outside the city limits while downtown remains a commercial center undergoing redevelopment efforts that have spanned several decades including plans to add 100 high-rise apartments blocks along I-465 providing significant job growth potential if completed currently there are only about 10 full time employed workers directly associated with these endeavors with no plans underway to bring any additional employment into town olwise many businesses locate outside urban sights when possible seeking access to better educated employees or tax breaks thereby limiting their impact on overall economic development
