Highland is a town in Howling Fork Township, Noble County, Indiana, United States. The population was 1,521 at the 2010 census. Highland is named after the highlands of Scotland. The first permanent settler in Highland was Captain John McDonald who arrived in 1814. He and his family built a log cabin on the banks of the White River. They were followed by other pioneers and farmers over the next few years until most of Highland had been settled when Colonel James McDowell led an army through Noble County in 1819 to fight against Tecumseh's Indian Expedition. When McDowell's army retreated across the Ohio River into Kentucky they left behind many farms and Taylor's Mills became one of only two mills ever located east of Indianapolis. In 1827, pioneer George Morrison moved from Logansport to start a gristmill on White River which became one of the largest flour mills in eastern Indiana. Other early businesses include Tyrrell & Co., groceries and hardware; Wm Fenton cigars; J H McConnell saddles; Drury & Brown boots; A H McAfee rifles; C R Mannion candles; Mrs E C Herndon did some lace making for local customers at home. During World War II there were several factories that produced munitions such as Ford Motors plant which manufactured jeeps and tanks for American troops, Armoury Plant which made machineguns and artillery pieces for U S forces, Krupp Company which made ammunition for both strategic bombing raids against Japan as well as military vehicles like tanks etc., all within short distance of each other on I-465 just outside Highlandtown limits
