Hobart, Indiana, is home to the Third Infantry Regiment of the United States Army. The regiment was organized on October 1, 1802 at Decatur and assigned to the brigade of General Andrew Jackson. The regiment fought in the Mexican-American War and during the Indian Wars. On November 3, 1848, the Third Infantry Regiment was redesignated as Company A (Third Infantry) of the Seventh Cavalry Regiment and mustered into service for four years. In 1862, Company A (Third Infantry) was re-designated as Headquarters and Headquarters Battalion (HHHB) of Brigade Major General John Muhlenberg’s First Corps under command of Lieutenant Colonel Nathaniel P. Banks. In 1863-1865, HHHB served with distinction in campaigns against Jesse James and Robert Ewing Antifederalists in Kentucky; at Cold Harbor; Battle of Petersburg; Second Manassas Campaign; Shenandoah Valley Campaign; etc. In 1865-1867, HHHB moved from Petersburg to camp near Culpeper Court House until ordered to Virginia by General Ulysses S. Grant to help suppress a southern insurrectionary movement known as “The Redeemer” led by John Brown Jr.. After serving three years within that theater of operations, company arrived in ready condition at Springfield Armory on October 9th, 1871 where it remained untilactivated on July 15th 1921 when it was reactivated as Battery A (Third Infantry) with headquarters at Fort Wayne Municipal Airport southwest of town. Captain Harry Wolden commanding battery began activation ceremony by firing five rounds from cannons into air over city while City Fathers watched from elevated platforms located atop several buildings just south side Dolores Park northeast corner Indianapolis street). Today battery still fires artillery salute each year during Armed Forces Day parade through downtown Hobart.) One important event associated with this unit is its participation in World War I which started six months later than initially planned due to American entry into World War I on April 6th 1917 without first declaring war against Germany or Austria which would have required congressional approval given their neutrality since 1794 according to Treaty Of Paris). In addition Commander Harry Wolden's Battery took part in maneuvers off Florida coast prior to deployment then participated massed along battlefront northwestern France before sailing back east for assembly area off Normandy beaches beginning early May 1918 boats landing troops disembarking onto beachhead characterized variously as "dodgy" because there were no pontoon bridges available other than collapsing causeway washed out & mudslides destroyed many villages & coastal towns along invasion route making landward advance difficult both night & day

The first European settler in what would become Hobart was James Robertson who came overland from Canada in 1812 as part of a group that included four other Scotsmen: John Colborne, Alexander McLennan, Robert Stevenson and Hugh Maclean (or "Maclean"). They were all elected to serve as justices of Appeal for Wayne County during Indian Removal proceedings under President George Washington's Executive Order No. 9981 on February 14, 1785 – an event now known as Indian removal day – although they had no legal title to such authority because they were not U.S citizens or natives of Indiana The tribe then known as Shawnee attacked settlers near present day Vincennes on July 12th 1800 driving them back about 10 miles before being driven off by militia led by Captain Neilson (later Rear Admiral David Dixon) after negotiations failed; this attack is generally considered one of the decisive engagements between British forces and American Indians during early 19th century America Captain Neilson's men also killed three Shawnee women and two children along with several others when they raided a settler encampment near present day Fort Wayne on November 6th 1800; this attack remains controversial among historians because there are no contemporary accounts or physical evidence linking Canadian soldiers with Indian activity in these areas at that time In 1818 John Nicholson set up a ferry service across LaPorte River between Dunlap Creek () just north of current day Hobart and Clearwater Creek (), today's Point Pleasant Township ()); this provided transportation goods needed for growing crops inland while also providing access to neighboring towns such as Gary () which became an important trading center due to its location at one end of LaPorte River deep water channel
