The town of Huntington, Indiana is located in the eastern division of the state of Indiana. The population was 9,143 at the 2010 census, making it the third-largest community in the city of Indianapolis. Huntington was founded by pioneers in 1814. It became a town in 1872. In 1907, it was renamed to Huntington after Samuel P. Huntington, who represented the town in Congress from California during that year. In 1915, a hydroelectric power plant was built on the Monon River and named for Samuel P. Huntington as part of an effort to increase electric production in Indiana within a short period of time. The plant operated until 1957 when it closed due to low profits and competition from other generators. In 1960, Huntingdon Township merged with Dearborn Township to form what is now known as Huntington-Dearborn Township. In 2002, demolition began on two small stores situated along Third Street which had been standing vacant for over twenty years because they were not compliant with new zoning regulations that applied to commercial properties north of I-465 (then called Old State Road). These buildings were eventually demolished and replaced by four large housing units which are currently known as The Commons at North Park Place
