The United States Air Force's gift history in Indianapolis, Indiana began in the late 1940s when General Curtis LeMay requested that the air force build a new airbase at Greenwood. The first AFB was built on the north side of Indianapolis during World War II and it served as home to fighter bombers and other aircraft. In 1947, General George Custer purchased land adjacent to what is now FirstEnergy Stadium for an aeronautical research center. Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) was founded there in 1949 and later became the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). In 1969, AFRL moved to Wright-Patterson AFB outside Dayton, Ohio after decades of service in Indianapolis. The city of Indianapolis also lost its aerospace industry when Northwest Aerospace Corporation closed its plant near downtown in 1992. However, since then, both cities have regained some of their former prominence within their respective industries thanks to AFRL's continued research and development activities. Today, AFRL employs over 2,000 people across six locations throughout Indiana and Ohio.
