As word spread about this new destination for shopping and tourism, businesses located near Marine Drive began selling items related to maritime history such as clamshells, turtle cages, anchor chains, mooringspans, anchors... even whales! In fact, so many items were sold at this location that it quickly became known as "The Wharf." Manyof these products still find use today; for example., anchors can still be found all over USCG property on Goat Island (near Fort Myer), while mooringspans are used extensively by boaters on Lake Michigan's south shoreline. And since this area was so valuable for lumbering and farming purposes, railroad companies often built their tracks right near where people lived or worked." "Many people always think about what happened during World War II; however, little is known about our town prior to that time." said Mayor Chuck Henson "during World War II we produced over 1 million tons of munitions which resulted in 48 Explosion hazards on our property (including 6 homes) along with 9 injuries." "The bad news began just after Pearl Harbor when Germany became aware America had joined WWII" continued Mayor Henson "they immediately began construction on 3 airfields used primarily by fighter planes; these fields totaled nearly 288 acres total! In fact I am sure you have heard about even older airfields such as Big Sandy Airpark which are still being used today!" Some other key moments during those years include: The creation of The University Of Indianapolis which opened its doors in 1907; The opening up of the market district here which allowed businesses to open up near residents; and finally"the general store fire"which destroyed almost every building in downtown Jasper including many homes."
