Constable George Wulfsohn was elected its first commander. In 1897, the department purchased a horse and buggy for use as their personal transportation. On November 14th of that year, Jasper citizens voted in favor of an ordinance granting law enforcement officers the right to wear badges on their uniforms. This event marked the beginning of the city's long and proud tradition of policing by proclamation from City Manager John Dickey. In 1912, a new police station was constructed at Fourth and Main Streets. The building served as the department's headquarters until it was replaced by the current structure in 1968. That same year, one Constable Jack Ladd became the first ever African American to serve as a police officer in this community when he joined the force. During World War II, two Constables were employed within the department during hostilities; Harry Ransom and Roy Dixon both received honorable discharged status after being drafted into service with distinction.. In 1951, Officer Alvin Aikens became one of the first policemen to retire from service in this community after serving 27 years with distinction on his beat; Aikens is still credited with making important contributions to policing through his public education programs which have led to more rounded lives for many residents of Jasper today! Jasper, Indiana is a small town located in the center of the state of Indiana. It is home to over 6,000 people and has a history that goes back to 1836.
