Jeffersonville, Indiana is a town in Daviess County,Indiana. The population was 1,912 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Evansville metropolitan area. As of the 2000 census, there were 2,046 people in Jeffersonville. Jeffersonville's history can be traced back to 1816 when General David Wilkinson founded the town on land that he bought from Nicholas Sparks and others in Daviess County. In 1825, Isaac Beecher became its first postmaster and conducted mail service through the town until his death in 1828. In 1840s, a gristmill was built by John Sikes and continued operation until it burned down in 1861. A saw mill followed suit two years later but also caught on fire. Then came a tannery (later renamed as a cheese factory) which operated from 1865 to 1888 with an output of 1 million pounds of cheese per year before it closed down due to economic conditions. The first store opened up shop in 1886 when Jno Fenton donated land for a store near what is now Old Main Street and Second Avenue South. The business had trouble making ends meet so Fenton reopened it under new management four years later with assistance from local businessman Prentice Houghton who donated $500 towards its construction. 3 more stores followed: one called "Cafeteria" (1909), another called "Grocery" (1911), and finally "Supermarket" (1972). By 1938-39 only one store remained open - this being known as "The Cotton Mill". Beginning around 1942-43 there were several attempts by GAFMCO to rebrand/rename Jeffersonville stores multiple times during World War II including changed names like "Chemical Plant", "Tractor Factory", etc., but these all failed because noone could come up with a good name for the town after they got their start in business again following war time restrictions on names change or lack thereof... In 1948 GAFMCO stopped operations altogether due to financial difficulties caused by hard currency depreciation following WWII; however many buildings remain standing today including the original cotton mill building still used today as apartments! Jeffco Coffee Museum has been located inside old chemical plant since 1978
